A tutor should be able to instill skills that will serve the students so well, both in academics and in life that they will no longer require help from us. I am very patient and non-judgemental when it comes to tutoring. I always try to put myself in my student's shoes, observe and try to cater to their needs, while making sure the quality of the…

Providing personalised support both academically and personally is one of the most important things that a tutor can provide. While there are standard ways to tackle most situations, there are cases specific to each student that requires deep and thorough understanding of the scenario in order to effectively deal with them. This could be a…

I believe that encouraging the student plays a very important role in teaching them. I want to motivate them to work harder and give them more confidence. And, of course, give them the perfect guidance regarding their teaching materials too! I am usually very persistent when it comes to tutoring someone. I'm always trying to think of myself in my…

A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is to empathize with the student on how he finds difficult to catch the concepts and ideas. Also, this is to let them express what they find difficult to understand. Aside from mastery of concepts of Math, Physics and Engineering Science subjects, I have developed different techniques of…

A tutor is a guide who would be able to give personal learning experience to students which they might not be able to get during a school class. I consider being able know the student's strength and weakness and explain them the topic accordingly to be the most important thing. People have different strengths, weakness and thinking capabilities. Tutors should be able to understand that and make sure that the way they are teaching should not be neither too overwhelming nor too boring/easy…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is recognise what, precisely, the student is struggling with and to tailor explanations of concepts in ways that the student will respond to. For example, a major conceptual hurdle for high school students can be learning about logarithms for the first time. Often the root of confusion…

Not to force feed content, but take an approach from a different angle of two if the first method does not work. Some understand content from different view points while some get it first try. Other than that, encouragement and support is the other driving factor which will help them want to do better and achieve more. I am patient, organised and…

I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

To expose someone to a subject in a manner that is encouraging and complete. There are many people who were irresponsibly exposed to subjects as rigorous as computer science and mathematics, as a consequence of which they start to believe that the subject is impossible, which with the little experience I have, I have never found to be the case. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a student if…

Inside ArtarmonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Josh worked through HSC physics exam questions focused on electromagnetism and the photoelectric effect, with extra practice on mass defect calculations.

In Year 11, Priya tackled circular functions by sketching graphs, finding x-intercepts, and using unit circle values for exact results.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Alex addressed exponential growth and decay problems along with probability applications involving combinations and permutations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student's long-answer responses often lacked clarity and technical terms—need to slowly incorporate more technical terms in physics long answers and be more succinct, as one tutor observed. This resulted in answers that were harder to mark and sometimes missed key points.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 Mathematics, over-reliance on the CAS calculator for routine algebra ("try to avoid over-reliance on CAS") meant foundational steps weren't always written out or understood, leading to small but costly algebraic mistakes during exams.

In both subjects, skipping explicit working made it difficult to identify where errors crept in under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Artarmon tutor noted a Year 11 student who, after previously losing marks for incomplete explanations in physics tests, now writes much more structured and coherent answers—recently scoring higher by clearly linking calculations to concepts.

A Year 10 student who once hesitated to tackle graph sketching questions now confidently completes derivative-based problems and even volunteers to try extra examples during sessions.

Meanwhile, a younger student made a noticeable shift: rather than just following along, she set up her own diagrams when working through force identification tasks, showing real independence as she finished all required examples without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Artarmon Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Artarmon Public School.
