Each student is unique and their interest in the subject may vary. It is important to identify the skills and improvement areas of each student and device a teaching methodology that suits well for each student. I am good in math and I teach well. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, create a supportive environment and encourage critical thinking. First, a tutor should offer clear explanations and help students understand challenging concepts. Second, a tutor should build a student’s confidence by creating a supportive environment to help…

No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

The most important thing a tutor can do is answer as many questions as the student has, regardless of whether or not it is a good question. In doing so, I believe it is crucial to create a comfortable atmosphere where the student to feels safe and not judged. Another important thing a tutor can do is to encourage independence, giving students a…

Facilitate the comprehension of the concepts studied, a tutor is not there to do the homework by himself but rather to show a better way to do it and to provide help in understanding the concepts needed to carry out a homework or while studying for an exam. Very closely tied to this is the building of the student, edifying the student if you…

A tutors time is the most important thing for a student. If a student requires some extra attention due to doubts it is the duty of the tutor to provide him/her with the extra time and support. As a tutor I feel it is very important to understand as to how the student is taking in the content. Is the content interesting for the student or is it…

Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. Having being tutored myself, I didn't respond as well with someone who could not meet me at my level than I did with a tutor who I felt I could relate to and trust. Be calm and understand that everyone thinks different, and just because you or another students gets it, the other student could struggle with it. Also find the particular concept or idea that a student cannot connect. Moreover, to track their process and be sure to work on their mistakes continuously. I worked in a tutoring center this year,…

Don’t make students memorize, make them understand it in their own way. A lot of the topics that are taught can actually be related to previous topics. If they can see that connection between each topic, then understanding tends to become easier. Also, we shouldn’t put too much pressure on them. That means don’t explain too quickly, but…

One of the most crucial things, which a tutor can do to benefit a student is to create a learning space that has a good atmosphere with support and understanding. Firstly,…

I think a tutor should empower students to think for themselves, as this is what is required for the student to succeed independently when taking exams. So the most important thing I could do as a tutor is to encourage students to work out answers rather than giving it to them immediately. I pride myself on being patient. I believe strongly that…

Tutors must be flexible in their assistance to students through recognising individual learning preferences. Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. I believe the best thing a tutor can do is to inspire confidence and a deep appreciation for lifelong learning in the student. While many students will not utilise the specific knowledge they learnt within a certain HSC subject later on, the ability to know how to learn; how to structure a study timetable, how to find a work-life balance, are all…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as both an academic and emotional mentor to alleviate some of the stress that comes with studying. Naturally, it is expected for tutors to help students with breaking down the content into manageable concepts for the student to understand. However, aspects such as study…

Inside ArtarmonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Josh worked through HSC physics exam questions focused on electromagnetism and the photoelectric effect, with extra practice on mass defect calculations.

In Year 11, Priya tackled circular functions by sketching graphs, finding x-intercepts, and using unit circle values for exact results.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Alex addressed exponential growth and decay problems along with probability applications involving combinations and permutations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student's long-answer responses often lacked clarity and technical terms—need to slowly incorporate more technical terms in physics long answers and be more succinct, as one tutor observed. This resulted in answers that were harder to mark and sometimes missed key points.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 Mathematics, over-reliance on the CAS calculator for routine algebra ("try to avoid over-reliance on CAS") meant foundational steps weren't always written out or understood, leading to small but costly algebraic mistakes during exams.

In both subjects, skipping explicit working made it difficult to identify where errors crept in under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Artarmon tutor noted a Year 11 student who, after previously losing marks for incomplete explanations in physics tests, now writes much more structured and coherent answers—recently scoring higher by clearly linking calculations to concepts.

A Year 10 student who once hesitated to tackle graph sketching questions now confidently completes derivative-based problems and even volunteers to try extra examples during sessions.

Meanwhile, a younger student made a noticeable shift: rather than just following along, she set up her own diagrams when working through force identification tasks, showing real independence as she finished all required examples without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Artarmon Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Artarmon Public School.
