Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. Lack of patience and comparing them with others will certainly hamper their learning process and will give them less confidence on their studies. Understanding the most effective way of learning for each student is also crucial. When I was…

I believe encouraging progress and development is more important than emphasis on getting the correct answers. This ensures an actual understanding of concepts and more effective retention of information I think that I am extremely patient and a good communicator. Communication in tutoring is key, as no two students are the same, and the tutor has…

The first goal is to improve his understanding and knowledge of the subject. Along with this goal comes the confidence that the student will gain in the learning process which might improve all his educational life. My knowledge about math subject and ability to explain mathematical principles to young students is my main strength. Also, building…

What I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster a healthy and suitable learning environment. One that motivates students to learn and to be able to confidently apply the knowledge they are taught both in and outside the classroom. Also since students are more likely to do better when they feel encouraged and…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

A tutor is a guide who would be able to give personal learning experience to students which they might not be able to get during a school class. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to imagine herself in the shoes of student and then make learning process easier. Gaining the student's trust and then making student feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to inspire and empower them to become independent learners. This involves not only teaching them course concepts, but also cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset. A tutor should foster curiosity, encourage questions and provide guidance and…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

I think the most important thing as a tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. I believe tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more…

I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. You succeed when you are no longer needed. I am a student and understand very well the issues students face when doing sums and exams. I believe I have mastered…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. An empowering tutor equips…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

I believe that it is important for a tutor to be so much more than what a teacher is. It is also extremely important for the tutor to always have a positive attitude and encourage their…

Inside AshfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ekam worked on fractions, including addition and multiplication, and then applied these skills to measurement topics such as distance, speed, and time using worded problems.

In Year 10, Alex tackled trigonometric equations involving multiple quadrants and explored data concepts like skewness and interpreting box plots.

For Year 12, Priya focused on integrating exponential functions as well as applying calculus to graphing tasks by finding stationary points on curves.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3, there were repeated challenges with remembering area and perimeter formulas—one session noted "despite having already written down the formula over and over again, [he] seems to be uninterested and not focused in class," which led to forgotten content week-to-week.

By Year 11, skipped steps became visible in working for median questions: a tutor remarked, "skipped steps in working here and there leading to careless mistakes."

In senior years, missed homework and reliance on tutor guidance limited independent understanding; during trigonometric identities revision (Year 12), incomplete set-out hid errors until feedback was given.

Confidence sometimes dipped after setbacks, causing quietness rather than seeking clarification.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Ashfield noticed that a Year 8 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with probability questions now speaks up as soon as he's unsure, leading him to solve more problems independently.

A Year 12 student demonstrated a real shift by revising and annotating his assignment before submission, making specific improvements based on feedback rather than submitting straight away—a big change from past rushed work.

Meanwhile, one younger student recently completed all of his homework correctly for the first time this term and was eager to show how he'd checked each answer himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashfield Municipal Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ashfield Public School.
