In my point of view, the main issue is that the student do not understand about their own problems. As a tutor, I must illustrate them what they are lagging in, and should gradually remove the knowledge or skill gap. A tutor should be a friendly person whom a student can communicate his problems. students usually copy the tutor styles to solve…

In my humble opinion, I believe that ACTIVE LISTENING is the most important quality that good tutors must possess. - Good tutors must recognise that students generally have an idea of the topic at hand. Instead of simply continuing to "teach" it is vital that tutors ask students of their understanding of the topic so that gaps in knowledge can…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

Hard work combined with a clear direction and plan has led to amazing results for many of…

A tutor must be a friend and a tutor at the same time.So that, the students can ask their doubts without any inhibition. At the same time, a tutor should understand the weak points of a student and help them in tackling that. Relating to my strengths as a tutor, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is giving a thorough and concise explanation of every single concept to a student, in a way that isn't only just memorizing, but also using their own logic and thought process to understand and learn on their own as they go. This must all be applied in an…

Understanding and patience, some students lack knowledge of basic concepts and require a boost, so it's important to tailor tutoring styles to each student, whether that is written examples or oral analogies, especially in the Maths and Sciences. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is understand their study habits and figure out the best ways to enhance their overall performance by improving the way of their study. Tanya, Atwell

Inside AtwellTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emma explored the Fibonacci sequence through an investigation and practiced number patterns using hands-on examples.

In Year 9, James worked on gradients, midpoints, and calculating the length of lines, as well as solving algebraic equations step-by-step.

For Year 10, Olivia revised trigonometric ratios and their applications in right-angled triangles, then moved on to consolidating skills with similarity problems using diagrams for support.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 algebra, one student consistently avoided writing out working, preferring to "do it all in my head"—this led to confusion when combining x and y terms and made errors hard to spot.

For a Year 8 trigonometry task, skipping steps meant mistakes crept in unnoticed; as the tutor noted, "organising the solution better would help keep track of the thought process."

In a Year 11 statistics lesson, only revising familiar question types limited progress on new problems.

When tackling fractions in Year 7, one student's tendency to swap negative signs arose from trying to solve everything mentally instead of methodically on paper.

Recent Achievements

One Atwell tutor recently saw a big shift in Caitlin's approach: after struggling with her maths assessments, she went back and redid every problem she'd missed last time—and got them all right on her own.

With a Year 11 student, Emma, the notes show she used to mix up key points when graphing trig functions but now quickly identifies and plots each type without needing reminders.

In a lower year group, David had difficulty understanding how values affect the mean in statistics; now he explains his reasoning out loud as he solves new questions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Success Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Atwell Primary School.
