I personally think the most important thing is to cater to each students individual needs and strengths, as not everyone is the same. Different students will require different approaches to the same topic, so I feel like I am able to do that if necessary. I believe my strengths lie in my strong logical skills to be able to help in many areas of…

Improve their self esteem by helping them do better at school. I think the student being tutored is the most important person, so you want to help them and improve their skills as much as possible. Strengths are listening, honesty, cheerfulness, calmness, communication Weaknesses: I'm probably a bit on the softer side, a bit too…

A tutor must be approachable and be able to relate to their students. Connections need to be formed so optimal and enjoyable learning can occur. I have a very relaxed and patient demeanor which helps when dealing with all kids. I can also relate very well to child. Another strength I have is that being a rare male pre-service teacher in the…

Ensuring that the student actually understands what is being explained is very important, if not, the student may be able to easily solve a problem with some assistance, but if they can't work out how to solve the problem on their own, they don't truly understand it. Therefore, it is important that the student understands the concepts and doesn't…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is relate to their learning. A great tutor will adapt their learning styles and pedagogy to frame the student and enable them to learn in the best way possible. Ultimately, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is instill self-confidence within the student, positively change a student's view and approach toward learning, and assist in improving student academic performance. In my opinion, a tutor is more likely to achieve these positive student outcomes if they are consistently: - Honest,…

Firstly, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to what the student believes they need to work on and aid them with that. The student needs are the highest priority and it is important they feel heard and listened to. Additionally, I believe that it’s important that we as tutors take the time to acquire extra…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to be someone that can focus on just them (1-on-1), where a teacher cannot, and to find a specific way to teach them based on the students needs (i.e. How the student learns best?). A teacher is unable to do this as much as they have many students to focus on. But tutors can…

I think the first step in the journey between student and tutor is to build rapport. If the student does not feel comfortable in the space and time allocated, the learning achieved will be sub-optimal. Secondly, I believe patience is critical for tutors - I have seen firsthand the frustration that students can have independently to potential…

Inside BalmoralTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lincoln worked on reading and constructing line graphs, along with measuring angles using a protractor.

In Year 10, Rebecca practiced solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula and reviewed key properties of right-angled triangles.

For Year 11, content included bivariate data analysis—specifically drawing scatter plots to examine correlation—and also factorising quadratics by both the null factor method and perfect square formulas.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working on mathematical induction and De Moivre's theorem tended to "try to do most of the work in his head," which made it difficult for tutors to spot errors or offer corrections. As one tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 8, another student often forgot to write out full workings during division problems; this led to calculation mistakes that slowed progress.

A Year 5 student became confused between perimeter and area but persisted through challenges, sometimes missing key instructions due to not reviewing all question details—extra time was spent clarifying before moving forward.

Recent Achievements

A Balmoral tutor noticed that Dyllan, a high school student, now asks for help with challenging polynomial long division instead of skipping tricky questions—he's grown more comfortable identifying where he needs support and working through problems together.

In another session, Clara made a shift from hesitating on worded quadratic problems to confidently drawing diagrams and solving them independently using new strategies she'd learned.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, one student who used to rush and miss steps in addition now slows down to check each answer before moving on, finishing her worksheet with only self-corrected mistakes this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bulimba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bulimba State School.
