First and Foremost, teaching every topic, every concept as clearly as possible and ensuring that the student has actually understood it. A tutor should also ensure that he is giving the student his full and complete attention during a class. I can explain topics very easily and precisely. I am great with giving examples and it is my favourite way…

A tutor should always be there to support a student throughout their academic journey by preparing them for examinations and more importantly teach them in a way to get them hooked into learning mathematics. Another vital role is to build confidence in a student by doing practice questions and papers. -I am an electrical engineering student…

To acknowledge development and passion and help the student grow in a direction that they deem appropriate. It is important to get to know the student and their aspirations in order to achieve this. I think simply put a tutor should give a student confidence that they can learn anything that is presented to them. It might take a different approach than they initially thought of but my job is to show them these different approaches. I am aware that it is sometimes extremely difficult to understand information when it is presented in only one…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build self-confidence. From my own experience, I know that grasping a concept feels much harder when it seems 'impossible.' Confidence changes that perspective, making challenges feel doable and providing the energy needed to tackle difficult problems. I foster this through…

As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

Helping to approach the problems from different perspectives, that makes the student get more independency regarding the subject to solve future problems by himself. I believe that is essential for a tutor to establish and master the “groundwork’’ and fundamental concepts with the students before moving on to more complicated concepts. For subjects like Mathematics and Physics, new knowledge is very commonly built on knowledge that you have learnt before. As a result, tutors need to make sure that…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

I have a very applied way to understand…

Since the tutor acts as a role model for the student, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take this opportunity to act as a mentor. By taking this role on board, the dynamic increases and the tutor can effectively teach. My greatest strength is patience and empathy. I have noticed the smartest tutors are not the best tutors. Poor tutors…

The most important thing a teacher can teach a student is something about how they learn best, like what techniques, environements, etc. they need to learn effectively. This is not only a skill that will help them any time they need to learn something in the future, but also something that will help them enjoy the process. I think I have excellent…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

Inside BanksmeadowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ghazal focused on working with fractions, decimals, and percentages, as well as refining her history journal writing by gathering information and crafting concise responses.

In Year 10, Sam tackled trigonometric identities and practised applying these to solve a range of problems.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack worked through advanced differentiation techniques including the chain rule, product rule, and quotient rule using exam-style questions for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student struggled with time management during problem sets—"she took a while to remember the formula," leading to incomplete answers under exam conditions.

For a Year 11 extension maths student, over-reliance on notes was evident when working through calculus application questions; missing formula recall slowed progress and led to hesitation with unfamiliar content.

In English (Year 10), another student depended heavily on online resources for grammar and punctuation rather than self-correcting, which made written responses less coherent.

In each case, moments of uncertainty or avoidance left gaps in understanding that showed up most sharply in timed tasks or independent writing.

Recent Achievements

One Banksmeadow tutor noted that Lucy, a Year 12 student, now approaches challenging calculus and trigonometry questions independently—last month she would leave difficult problems unfinished, but this week she worked through trial paper questions on her own, correcting previous mistakes.

In a recent high school session, Ruby shifted from hesitating on algebraic inequalities to solving extension questions confidently and even asked for extra practice problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, Bas in Year 4 has started using pen-and-paper strategies for multiplication and division before reaching for the calculator—a big step up from his earlier guesswork—and finished all assigned word problems accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mascot Library (incl. the George Hanna Memorial Museum)—or at your child's school (with permission), like Banksmeadow Public School.
