My biggest strength is breaking down complex problems into simple, manageable steps that make sense to students. I’m patient, encouraging, and always start from what the student already understands. I also focus on developing problem-solving skills instead of just giving answers. With over two years of tutoring experience in Iran, as well as…

Relatability is so important. We see a huge disconnect between teachers/tutors and students. I believe that an equal playing field with mutual respect creates a unique learning environment and nurtures encouragement. The student can see how the teacher got to where they are, and can realise that they, too, can learn these concepts just as those…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build a relationship with them. Listening to a student, assessing what areas they struggle with most, and celebrating the accomplishments they have made in their studies (whether big or small), is key in strengthening the student's trust in the tutor. In turn, this…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to provide academic guidance, human connection, and motivation and drive interest of the student towards the subject. The combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. Creativity and enthusiasm for teaching. Ability to explain…

The tutor must be patient and approachable. He/she should make sure that the student should be able to understand the lesson and perform well in class. I am patient and kind. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are build understanding, confidence, and consistency. In my opinion, it is of utmost importance that tutor could make student love and curious about the subject as it will encourage self-study later on. This is a top important skill for students at university or at work, allowing them to learn at their own pace and schedule. I give a lot of examples to make concepts easier to understand and adjust my…

It is important to be patient and approachable so that students feel comfortable coming to you with their queries. Availability and dependability is also important. If a student has last minute issues the night before their exam it is important that they can rely on their tutor to get back to them by the end of the day with an answer. I am patient…

I think understanding that every kid is different and special in their own way, and they have their own needs and methods of approaching problems is very important. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is none other than making the student truly understand the solution to a problem, and the understanding of how the solution is built up, instead of forcing the student to memorize a certain formula to solve a problem, teaching them to recognize patterns as well as using simple…

motivation, encouragement, and guidance. for me, tutoring is not about giving a subject material and that's it, the parents will leave with their child, therefore, you have to be trustworthy, and show them that he will be better not only as a student but also as a human. other than technical abilities, motivation and enthusiasm to the students,…

Tutors should build on the foundations of a lesson. The proverb holds true: "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime." We're giving students the tools necessary not to just answer the question, but to be able to have the knowledge and wisdom to apply those tools to other challenges…

Inside BarangarooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Ava focused on advanced trigonometry by reviewing her recent test and then moved on to polynomials, tackling chapter exercises and logs.

Year 10 student Tom worked through several lessons on quadratics and linear relations, with sessions dedicated to solving worded problems using algebraic methods.

For a Year 3 primary student, time was spent practising addition and subtraction strategies as well as developing reading comprehension skills through short passages.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student repeatedly avoided writing full working for rearranging equations—"she said, 'I just get stuck at the start,' and would hesitate to begin unless prompted."

In a senior English assignment, another left their TEEL structure incomplete and was reluctant to link arguments back to topic sentences, resulting in an unfinished draft.

A Year 11 student struggled with domain and range because revision focused only on familiar problems rather than tackling new question types; this left them underprepared for tests requiring flexible thinking.

After setbacks, confidence dropped sharply and questions went unasked, making progress slower than expected.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Barangaroo recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitation, started tackling circle geometry questions on her own and now attempts problems independently before asking for help.

In a Year 12 session, Martina made real progress—she stopped relying on example solutions and now remembers formulas well enough to solve algebraic fraction questions without prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously stumbled over reading tasks managed to read an entire short paragraph aloud and explain its meaning without assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fort Street Public School.
