In my opinion, the most important things that a tutor can do for a student would be explaining concepts to them in ways that the individual student can understand as well as aiding them in memorisation and application of the concept tutored. Moreover, I strongly believe that it is extremely important for a tutor to leave a student without self…

"Tutoring improves the tutee's self-esteem, attitude toward subject matter, and academic performance as well as personal growth." Indeed, from a personal viewpoint, tutoring is not only providing additional support for students to 'complete' their homeworks. Building student's self-esteem and stimulating their interest are equally important. I…

I believe a tutor should inspire a student to reach for certain goals by first of all being an example of greatness him/herself or by pointing the student towards greatness. A tutor could achieve this by citing examples of great people whose names lived beyond them thus helping the student find purpose in life. Once the passion to become more and…

The single most important aspect for a tutor is to be able to keep the student's attention; losing their focus implicates the loss of any further progress in the topic at hand and their faith in how much you can help them as a mentor. Maintaining their concentration throughout the duration of the session, while tiring at times, pays off. I believe…

First thing is trust, the tutor should be responsible, good listener, and patient; as a result, the student will trust on him and feel more comfortable to learn. Second, the tutor should understand and analyze the student difficulties to create an individual approach for his learning. Therefore, teaching will be an easy way for the tutor and the…

Inside BatesfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Phoebe revised indices in preparation for her exam, focusing on simplifying and evaluating index expressions.

In Year 10, Max tackled the discriminant and turning points within quadratic equations, using graphing to visualise how these features change with different parameters.

For Year 9, Emily practised solving probability problems using tree diagrams and Venn diagrams to compare outcomes of multi-step experiments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student repeatedly missed key details in measurement and conversion questions because the prompt wasn't read carefully—one session noted, "he did that today with one question concerning the conversion of units."

For a Year 9 algebra topic, another student admitted to getting distracted during lessons, especially when tired after school: "It happens, Zack did comment he was a little tired from the day's school lessons."

In both cases, not slowing down to fully process instructions or letting outside distractions creep in led to avoidable errors and some frustration during practice.

Recent Achievements

One Batesford tutor noticed a real shift with Zack, a high school student who previously hesitated to ask questions but now regularly pauses to seek clarification when something's unclear—he even back-checks his answers instead of moving on if he gets stuck.

In another session, Aiden, also in high school, has started laying out every step of his solutions neatly and talks through his reasoning aloud, showing much more initiative than before when he'd quietly muddle through mistakes.

Meanwhile, Hudson in Year 7 tackled a tricky fractions exercise by confidently explaining each step out loud and then successfully completed all set problems without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corio Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rollins Primary School-Batesford Campus.
