I think not just to teach but to integrate the mathematics into their brain. Ways to do this include repetition, paraphrasing and getting them to say things back to me in their own words, these three things are extremely important so that they don't jut forget things when I leave. I think I'm really good at explaining the maths, carefully and…

My main priority as a maths tutor has always been to develop a love, or at least form of passion, from the student regarding whatever I teach. From first hand experience I know that it is almost impossible to truly devote effort and time into a subject you can't stand. Thus, I believe a tutor must help provide a path for more effective learning…

A tutor can help boost a student's confidence because they provide individual attention that is not always available in a classroom situation. A tutor can help target learning difficulties and encourage freedom to ask questions. I am an empathetic person who can relate to and understand people's needs. A tutor should be patient, allowing students to build confidence in answering things alone and creating a basis for independent learning. They should also create a kind, open environment that adapts to all students needs. I am someone who struggled in certain aspects of school life so I had to adapt the information given to me in order to absorb…

Engage and excite. If I can get someone excited about maths or science or even just one question, then they’re going to remember it. Also just a good role model, letting a student know they can message if they have questions or talk to me about things they don’t feel comfortable with. I’ve worked with, and feel comfortable, tutoring kids…

One the most important things a maths tutor can do for their student is to teach them how to study and learn in the absence of any teacher or tutor in order to help them throughout their entire student life. In my opinion, a good tutor is one who aims to get to know the student personally in order to use the best approach towards understanding difficult topics and concepts. It’s also important to provide encouragement and support, as well as understand that students might get frustrated or discouraged if they are unable to easily grasp a concept. I…

There are things taught at school that are not always assimilated by some of the students. This is because in school, they follow a standard setting or style of teaching which is not applicable for everyone but only for a certain percentage or average. To teach students that it is okay to be wrong or make mistakes as long as you correct it afterwards. It is important to attempt to answer each question on a test and work sheet as if you attempt it then you might get some points on your final grade. Inside BeaumarisTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jack focused on solving linear equations for his assignment and revisited the use of indices in measurement questions.

In Year 9, Mia tackled advanced algebraic concepts, including challenging problems from Chapter 4 and some extension work into Chapter 5, with extra emphasis on transformation of domains and ranges.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sarah concentrated on rates of change and a basic introduction to limits and derivatives, also reviewing key trigonometry concepts through recent assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in maths often left working untidy, making calculation steps hard to follow—"needs to lay out his steps on paper," a tutor noted, which sometimes hid mistakes in multi-digit multiplication.

In Year 10 English, another student avoided taking notes during "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and struggled later to recall themes and character roles for essay writing.

For VCE Maths Methods, incomplete revision was evident: "needs to do the non-tech practice test tomorrow," yet missed homework meant she faced the test less prepared and more anxious about calculator skills under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Beaumaris tutoring session saw a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with essay introductions begin structuring them independently, showing much clearer arguments and linking evidence more effectively in their English work.

A Year 11 maths student, who used to hesitate when facing new topics, came prepared with her own questions for the tutor and worked through challenging rate of change problems confidently, even writing out detailed working without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student started verbalising his thought process during problem-solving—something he hadn't done before—which helped him organise his calculations more neatly and spot mistakes on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Beaumaris Primary School.
