The most important thing a tutor can do for a s student is to be able to identify what they are struggling with and work with the students in such a way, for the students to conclude the answer by themselves. From my experiences with working working with children at Vinnies and helping them with reading and math as well as tutoring younger members…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student interested in whatever subject they are learning. The best way to learn anything is to show genuine interest in that topic. Tutors should not only assist students in specific areas, they should also engage with the student in a manner that makes the student interested in…

There are a few things I consider to be the most important. First, be honest, if we don't know how to do it well we can not teach. Then, be patient, sometimes it is hard for students to absorb all the knowledge. And we should be a good listener, and willing to share our own learning experiences. I had experience in teaching math and guitar, all my…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is be supportive and caring of a student's particular needs or circumstances. It is incredibly important that tutors make students feel comfortable and confident to ask questions, push themselves, make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. Often, more so than rigorous academic…

A tutor, morally, can pave a path to right mindset for a student and impart knowledge not just of textbooks but moral education too . Tutors can also play a role of godparent for many students in life via providing mature guidance . Last but not the least, tutors are like the water to seeds, thus being significant for a child's nourishment. …

One of the most important things a tutor can do is instil a sense of passion for the subject. The student should feel comfortable going to class and doing the homework afterwards. Provide support to students in both the academic and mental difficulties they might be going through. Often as a tutor you must recognise that students who get tutoring need further help than what is being given and may have academic insecurity, so it is our role to help them improve on this and gain confidence in their learning, with hopes that…

Inside BelconnenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aiden worked on finding the highest common factor and lowest common multiple using practical number examples.

In Year 9, Olivia focused on algebraic equations and was introduced to plotting points on the Cartesian plane through graphing activities.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan practiced applying the chain rule for differentiation and tackled integration questions from recent exam papers.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was inconsistent across several year levels. For example, in Year 9 Mathematics, one student left Chapter 9 homework unfinished and struggled to organize their notes ("need to get more organised then will be able to succeed").

In senior years, incomplete past exam questions slowed progress before assessments.

A Year 11 student's working was hard to follow—notes lacked clear steps in integration practice, leading to confusion when reviewing mistakes.

In Year 8 algebra tasks, skipping problem highlights made it difficult to spot key information. This led to extra time spent re-reading rather than solving problems directly during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Belconnen tutor noticed Charlotte, a senior student, confidently applying the chain rule in calculus after previously hesitating to tackle these problems without step-by-step guidance.

In Year 7, Molly now completes her maths homework independently during sessions and has started identifying factors of numbers on her own—just weeks ago she needed prompting for every step.

Felix, another high schooler, recently solved probability questions using tree diagrams and could explain his reasoning clearly instead of just guessing at answers. He finished by setting up and solving equations without extra hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belconnen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like University of Canberra Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra.
