It is crucial to encourage critical thinking, to guide active learning but not spoon-feed, to give motivation and encouragement to students. Tutors and teachers should inspire students and be a good role model. My strengths as an educator include patience, adaptability and understanding. I encourage students to speak out what they have understood…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a strong support system so that they can confidently ask for help and not feel discouraged when they don't understand a concept. During high school I had an amazing tutor who supported me every step of the way and I think that is the best thing you can do for a student. I think…

I believe the role of the tutor is to build the basic skills of english comprehension/essay writing to that the student is prepared to tackle any assignment or examination. I do not believe in rote learning but instead on delving deeply into specific issues a student may have with writing and to address them methodically. It is not about the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is help them teach skills that they can apply lifelong. These skills includes ways to analyse, think, problem-solve. Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). A tutor is there to build confidence, in my opinion. Regardless of the comments of parents, teachers, siblings, a tutor should believe in their students and empower them to perform at the highest level capable. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding of any…

In my opinion, a tutor should foster a safe and encouraging space for learning, build students’ confidence, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. It’s about empowering students, not just teaching content. In fact, implementing teaching strategies to adapt to the student's learning style is crucial for better comprehension.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the one-on-one attention that is not given to them in schools with large class sizes. The student needs to be able to feel comfortable enough to ask questions (even the embarrassing ones) and they need to know that the tutor will sit with them for as long as it takes to…

It is important to be patient and a good listener. Students learn at their own pace and you cannot push them. Even if something seems simple to you, for the student it might not be. Being a good listener means not dominating the conversation. Allow the students to ask questions and give the students plenty of time to answer your questions.…

Inside BellfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ethan worked on converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and representing fractions on a number line, using diagrams for visual understanding.

Year 8 student Olivia focused on indices—practising both positive and negative indices—and revisited measurement concepts including perimeter of circles.

For Year 10, Jacob tackled linear equations and trigonometry basics such as identifying sine, cosine, and tangent ratios in right-angled triangles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly guessed answers in maths rather than working them out on paper, with one tutor noting, "He got up several times to play basketball during class."

In Year 10, forgetting to bring textbooks and materials made it difficult to review past challenges—"She needed to bring her maths books so I could see what she had struggled with this week."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student ran out of time on an exam, missing simple errors due to poor planning. These habits led to lost marks and missed opportunities for targeted feedback in each session.

Recent Achievements

A Bellfield tutor noticed Ollie, a Year 10 student, recently made fewer mistakes on area and perimeter problems by slowing down and using the standard formula they created together—he used to rush through and miss key steps.

In another session, Kiera (Year 11) moved from relying on hints to working through challenging English essay planning almost entirely independently, making her own quote lists for the first time.

Meanwhile, Felix in primary school finally started applying punctuation correctly in his writing without reminders after weeks of forgetting full stops.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
