I also believe that making them believe that they are already good at what they do would prove to be a significant improvement for them, as our mindstates about situations plays a major role in our lives. I believe a maths tutor should make the student feel heard and confident. A tutor should remove fear around mistakes, encourage questions, and help the student enjoy learning rather than memorising answers. I am patient and calm in my approach. I explain concepts step by step and adjust my pace based on how the student responds. I ask questions to…

A tutor should be able to explain concepts clearly and easily to the student. They should know many different techniques so the student can understand at least one of them. They should go above and beyond to make sure that the student succeeds. My strengths are identifying a student's weaknesses, knowing multiple ways of solving the same problem,…

Listening. I think the best thing a maths tutor/mentor can do is listen to their students to find out which subjects/areas that need to be focused on. Anyone can teach the syllabus but a great tutor will produce a study plan suited to each individual student which will help bring best out of them. studying at RMIT has helped further broaden my…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

Inside BellfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ethan worked on converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and representing fractions on a number line, using diagrams for visual understanding.

Year 8 student Olivia focused on indices—practising both positive and negative indices—and revisited measurement concepts including perimeter of circles.

For Year 10, Jacob tackled linear equations and trigonometry basics such as identifying sine, cosine, and tangent ratios in right-angled triangles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly guessed answers in maths rather than working them out on paper, with one tutor noting, "He got up several times to play basketball during class."

In Year 10, forgetting to bring textbooks and materials made it difficult to review past challenges—"She needed to bring her maths books so I could see what she had struggled with this week."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student ran out of time on an exam, missing simple errors due to poor planning. These habits led to lost marks and missed opportunities for targeted feedback in each session.

Recent Achievements

A Bellfield tutor noticed Ollie, a Year 10 student, recently made fewer mistakes on area and perimeter problems by slowing down and using the standard formula they created together—he used to rush through and miss key steps.

In another session, Kiera (Year 11) moved from relying on hints to working through challenging English essay planning almost entirely independently, making her own quote lists for the first time.

Meanwhile, Felix in primary school finally started applying punctuation correctly in his writing without reminders after weeks of forgetting full stops.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
