I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to empathise with them. Every student has different learning capabilities. It is important for a tutor to understand that and go the extra mile to ensure that every student is able to keep up. I believe that I have a strong grasp on math and physics subjects. It is crucial to understand the particular learning style of each student as everyone is an individual. Furthermore, to remain encouraging and provide motivation where necessary, always remembering that learning is a process and that it is my role to guide the student along that process. Having recently been a high-school student I understand the…

Firstly, a tutor needs to spot what students are in need and look for the best solution for them. For example, students may not be interested in some topics and perform badly, tutor should notice it is not about the ability of the students but the motivation. To solve this problem, tutor should think of planning the lesson in a fun…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence. It's not just about helping them get the right answerâ”it's about helping them believe that they can get there on their own. When a student feels supported, understood, and encouraged, they’re more willing to try, ask questions, and grow. A tutor…

Instil them with confidence! Breaking down those confidence barriers a student might have could result in them tackling a question they would have never attempted otherwise. This also means persevering when they get answers wrong - they know they'll get there eventually. Another really important part of being a tutor is providing the student…

In my opinion, the most critical responsibility of a tutor is not during the teaching phase, but in the phase that comes after the lesson. After learning the theory, the student will begin practising problems related to the topic and it is during this period, that most of the learning takes place. Hence, it is important for tutors to be there to…

I believe that understanding is the most important thing a tutor must do for a student. Without comprehension, the tutor would not be able to communicate with the student in the same language, making it impossible for the tutor to address the issue the student is having and come up with solutions to help the student's condition. I am currently…

I believe being able to provide individualised instructions is a crucial part of being a tutor. The most important thing is to be flexible and non-judgemental. You have to be open to different challenges that the student may be facing beyond the subject. Each student is different and has different ways to learn and as such your teaching method should reflect this. I think my strengths are that I am patient but firm when teaching my students.…

A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. I should be able to make learning fun for the student and make the student feel more confident while dealing with the subject. Inside BentleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Anna practised converting between fractions and decimals as well as solving measurement problems involving area.

For Year 8, Tom focused on graphing linear relations and working through equations and inequalities using real-life examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia revised trigonometric relationships by connecting sine, cosine, and tangent values with angles, alongside applying the Pythagoras' theorem to a variety of questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left out written working in algebra, as noted: "need practise showing 'working' when solving any mathematical problems," which led to hidden errors and slower correction.

In Year 10 trigonometry, confusion between values and angles persisted—"easy to get distracted most of the time"—especially with radians.

A younger student repeatedly forgot the multiplication tables during fraction work, making even basic calculations slow.

For several sessions, a Year 7 did not bring required materials like textbooks or exercise books; this meant missed practice opportunities and incomplete follow-up on geometry concepts discussed in lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Bentleigh tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who'd always hesitated to speak up when stuck with algebra now confidently asks clarifying questions before attempting problems—something she never did last term.

In another session, a Year 11 student who previously made frequent errors graphing trigonometric equations managed to solve and graph each type correctly on her own, only double-checking answers at the end.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often mixed up fractions and decimals is now reliably converting percentages to fractions without prompting and can explain each step aloud as he works.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Paul's School.
