It's important for a tutor to help a student get the correct answer, but more importantly it is critical that the student understands the concept behind which the answer was based. It is important for a tutor to be able to communicate with the individual in the way which is best suited for the student so that they can efficiently grasp the…

Teaching a student the content they need to know is always a good start, however teaching a student how to build on their knowledge and further their understanding is the most important, essentially teaching them how to learn. Being able to understand new things and connect them to concepts learned previously is what I think to be the most…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is give the student a sound understanding of the concepts and thought processes involved in the different areas of mathematics and not just now to answer the common question types and plug values into any given formula. I believe this allows students to better adapt to the harder, left-field…

The most important thing in my opinion is to encourage the student in their studies by helping them to develop a love of learning. I also believe a tutor has the resposibility to be a role model in the lives of their students as they have a unique opportunity to teach what they're passionate about to someone willing to learn. I have always been…

I think it's the tutor's responsibility to support a student in their learning growth and start to see learning as a process that everyone can do. This starts with helping them gain confidence so that their self-esteem in the classroom isn't a barrier. I am very kind, warm and friendly. My sociable nature is very helpful in developing a strong…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be able to tailor their teaching style and method of approach towards each student. Being a source of advice and support in a student's scholarly journey. I am approachable and non-judgemental so students can ask me for help on school topics that they may not want to ask their teachers or parents due to anxiety. I use learning styles that complement the student I am teaching, as opposed to a "one size fits all"…

A tutor must first create a positive friendly relationship with the student. After this, the student will have trust in their tutor and will listen to the tutor's instructions. If a student is struggling, the student will tell them not to put their head down but rather try to make those questions easier for the student to solve them and therefore…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be a mentor for a student. Inside BerowraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ella focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, as well as practising long division with remainders.

For Year 9, Sam worked through probability concepts using dot plots and frequency tables to analyse data distributions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia explored financial mathematics by calculating simple and compound interest, alongside tackling area and perimeter problems relevant to real-world scenarios.

Recent Challenges

Not showing working caused a Year 10 student to lose marks in recent tests—"he had full pages with no working," which made it difficult to spot and correct errors, especially in surds and algebra.

In Year 11, forgetting formulas for compound interest and depreciation meant extra time was spent searching rather than solving problems.

A Year 7 student regularly misread multi-step word problems; one tutor noted: "He stopped after finding how many went on the excursion, but missed the question about those who did NOT go."

For a primary student, messy number placement in long division made following calculations—and self-correction—much harder.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Berowra noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after struggling to apply the compound interest formula in past sessions, was able to use it accurately without prompting for both monthly and quarterly scenarios.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student who used to mix up like terms showed clear improvement by independently grouping and simplifying expressions correctly during algebra work.

At primary level, one student who previously hesitated with time zone questions is now confidently calculating time differences between countries using tables, even deciding whether to add or subtract based on location.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Even though Brendan only has Gennady for a short time, but I can see a great improvement in his maths, also he seem to be more confident.  The feedback I got from Brendan is Gennady was very easy to understand, he tend to explain thing in a simple way, we tried many tutors before and wasted so much of his time.  I definitely recommend him for VCE specialist maths.

I would like to thank you for providing a wonderful service to us.  We were recommended to you by a friend of my daughters and this being the first time we had sought a tutor, we weren't really sure what to do or how to go about it.  You made the whole process simple and easy for us.  Even though the initial tutor didn't relate to my daughter, there was no problem with us changing to another tutor.  This wonderful young woman was just the right person for my daughter.  They both understood each other and my daughter approached her year 12 maths exam with so much more certainty and knowledge.  We won't know for a while yet, the result of the exam but my daughter feels very confident about it.

WE are very happy with Jades work with Tanisha, Tanisha is very comfortable with Jade.  Tanisha has improved with her maths so far thanks to Jades help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Berowra Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pacific Berowra Christian School.
