A good tutor can boost the confidence of his/her student, can motivate the student to face problems by encouraging critical thinking. The tutor should encourage the student to speak out their mind and ask questions. I am a keen listener which I believe, enables me to understand what the student needs. I try to site real life scenarios while…

As mentioned above, tutoring gives me more space to understand a student's difficulty. Thus, I believe that a tutor's biggest responsibility is to patiently guide the student through that difficulty, in other words, to unlock their ability to comprehend a lingual matter. Additionally, a tutor's role also encompasses helping the students gain more…

A tutor can help improve a student in academic success. In a classroom setting a teacher has to cover a specific amount of content within a particular time period, some students can pick up the content very easily while others may lag behind on the content. A tutor however solves this issue by understanding the student's strengths and weaknesses…

I believe that a tutor is not merely someone who helps students to better understand certain materials taught at school. A tutor should be a role model both in their character and willingness to learn. A tutor should plant motivation and confidence in their students so that they believe that they can succeed in whatever areas they're lacking at,…

Being patient. A lot of teachers get frustrated when students do not understand concepts the way they teach them. It is important to teach every student in their own way and be patient with the teaching process. Otherwise a student's confidence and motivation to learn is harmed. I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. You succeed when you are no longer needed. I am a student and understand very well the issues students face when doing sums and exams. I believe I have mastered…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. I think there are a lot of qualities that go into being a good tutor. Some of the most essential ingredients are to be compassionate and build rapport . A good tutor should take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. They will be caring and compassionate, but also professional. Having a good rapport with the student…

Inside BexleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student William focused on index laws and scientific notation, then practiced probability questions using examples from Chapter 2.

A Year 11 student, Emily, worked through HSC exam paper problems covering normal distribution and financial mathematics, as well as finding roots of quadratic equations with applications in geometry.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Olivia strengthened her understanding of angle theory—especially with parallel lines and triangles—and reviewed plotting straight line graphs on the Cartesian plane.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student often avoided writing full working in algebra and calculus, saying "I know the answer," but missing steps led to calculation slips—especially under exam pressure.

In Year 9, a lack of organisation with formulae meant that when solving geometry problems, the correct method was known but not set out clearly on paper.

For a Year 5 learner, motivation dropped after returning from a long holiday; homework was incomplete and key multiplication facts had to be re-taught during sessions.

These habits left students spending valuable lesson time retracing steps or relearning rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

A Bexley tutor noticed Milo, a Year 12 student, had previously found financial maths and normal distribution formulas challenging but now solves related problems independently and accurately.

Benjamin, in high school as well, initially hesitated with square roots; after working through the concept step by step, he managed to solve equations and factorise expressions without needing prompts.

Meanwhile, Jessica in Year 5 used to struggle with fractions—she would guess answers instead of showing her process—but recently completed her homework almost error-free, checking her own work before asking for feedback.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bexley Public School.
