Having that listening ear for your student is important as every child is different. As such, it is important to know and acknowledge that each student will have a different skill set and thus succeed in different approaches. That listening ear will be helpful and important as this will give the student opportunities to explain themselves more…

As much as it is important to ensure that students excel in their academics, I find it equally as important to instill the right learning attitude and values. I am able to simplify complicated concepts, making them into bite sized pieces which can be easily understood and internalised by the…

Engage and excite. If I can get someone excited about maths or science or even just one question, then they’re going to remember it. Also just a good role model, letting a student know they can message if they have questions or talk to me about things they don’t feel comfortable with. I’ve worked with, and feel comfortable, tutoring kids…

Reiterating what I have already mentioned, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them HOW to learn and HOW to tackle future difficult areas of study. Of course I will work through any problem that they struggle with and provide the correct answer/solution/etc. but I hope to teach them that when they come across a future…

In addition to increasing the student's confidence in his/her academic prowess through his/her understanding of a difficult concept, a tutor may also help incite the innate curiosity of a life-long learner. Likewise, not only does a tutor help achieve and maintain academic excellence, but also build sustainable life-long skills that may aid the…

As all students would have different levels of understanding, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take the time to devise individual learning plans for the students, plans which suit the individual's learning style and would be most effective in seeing them reach their full intellectual capacity. Punctuality and reliability are also…

A tutor must be willing to work with and adapt for each student. It is critical to not treat tutoring as one-size-fits-all - indeed many students may be getting a tutor because standard learning methods aren't working for them. It is also essential that tutors create a safe learning space where students are free to ask questions and give opinions.…

Ensure that they never feel as though they are less intelligent than another person, or that wanting/needing additional help outside of school is a bad reflection on them. There is also the need for empathy and patience when it comes to teaching someone anything new to them. Enjoying the process of teaching someone new information, as well as…

Definitely to be patient with them because it can be really daunting to start tutoring. I think also to really ensure that they understand the content because they may just say they've understood it but may not have. Finally, I think to just make them feel understood and heard. I believe the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable with you, but also maintaining an atmosphere of "work time" so that the session is as productive as possible. An understanding that children, especially younger ones, cannot focus on tedious tasks as well as adults want them to, is very important to have as a tutor. Breaking…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to assist them in finding unique ways to remember or understand concepts. This way, the students are driven to configure their own solutions and strategies in the future when they are faced with challenges in the absence of a tutor. Giving your student confidence and guidance is key. When teaching a concept, the biggest part in my mind is not only being able to establish an understanding for the concept to the student, but for the student to feel confident in their own knowledge. That initial growth in confidence in a subject is usually what fuels later motivation and…

I believe in having a proper conversation everyday with the child. So that, we can understand the gaps in their understanding and improve them in the areas that they are lagging behind. Inside Black RockTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Isabel practised times tables and division with remainders, then worked on reading comprehension using short stories.

For Year 9 Jack, sessions focused on simplifying and expanding algebraic expressions as well as working with like terms in algebra.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Mia tackled solving linear equations using a CAS calculator and revised geometric sequences and arithmetic sequences through chapter exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for exams left most revision until the week before, which limited time for deep practice and meant she "needed to work on more questions prior to the test."

For a Year 8 student, working mainly on easier exercise numbers was noted: "try completing one or two of the difficult questions... much more effective than just the lower numbered exercises."

In Year 6 maths, messy written calculations sometimes made it hard to find errors; as observed, "needs to lay out his steps on paper." These habits led to last-minute stress and hidden mistakes during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Black Rock noticed Isabel, a Year 9 student, has begun to check her answers independently using the textbook and corrects her own mistakes—a big shift from relying on step-by-step guidance earlier this term.

In Year 11 maths, Grace started preparing questions ahead of each session and now confidently tackles financial maths problems she once found confusing.

Meanwhile, Gisele in Year 3 recently managed to read aloud for an extended period without hesitation and even remembered to pause at commas—something she struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Black Rock Primary School.
