Provide the student with confidence. Not only with their work but confidence in the fact that their tutor is able to accurately educate them and use that information at school or university My biggest strength as a tutor is certainly my ability to adapt my lessons accordingly. This means if I notice a student struggling to understand my…

Whilst an understanding of the content is important, tutors should understand the way they present examples and what these examples include can stress students or cause them to have misconceptions. They should be willing to extend the understanding of students but understand the dangers of pushing a student "too hard." Personally I used to be…

To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. In short, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be for tutors to ensure that students are confident in how they approach a problem. My strengths as a tutor, I would say,…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in the student’s ability and to build their confidence in themselves and their academic ability. To do this, a tutor should tailor their teaching approach to every student. Another important thing tutors can do for their students is to guide the student to develop…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is helping them improve their academics and achieve the highest goal in their ability. For example, once students feel doubting about the topic they have studied at school, the tutor should explain where the students have not understood and make sure to move on once they understand…

Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. I think the most important job of a tutor is to help the student, not just in answering questions, but by giving them a fundamental understanding of the content that they would be able to reapply to many other questions, particularly ones that are curveballs. Apart from that, giving them the belief that they can do well if they just apply…

I believe that teachers/tutors make the greatest impact on a developing child or young adult's mind. Apart from the child's family, a teacher/tutor has the most influential face to face contact with a student, where it be as a mentor or as a friend. Hence, I strongly feel that tutors have the opportunity and responsibility to educate and develop a…

Tutors can help students develop the knowledge required for their schooling, but also help students develop the skills to learn efficiently and to a deeper level. This sets up good foundations for the future, if the student would like to study more in the future in the field, and will be helpful for future endeavors (university for example). I am…

A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. In my opinion, the most important thing a private tutor can do for a student is give them the opportunity to make mistakes in a safe environment where they feel they won't be judged. Building confidence and supporting students to increase their self-esteem won't only help them in their school subjects, but is a valuable skill that will last them a…

Tutors can be a reason to guide the students in the right direction. Sometimes, a student might need a tiny little nudge to get them on track and tutors can be or are the right persons for that. A tutor can be a friend guiding the student in every obstacle they come across. A tutor can also be a role model for the students by creating a long…

I am opinion I reckon the most important is for the student to know their true passion in knowledge. Many of us are forced to be good at something and spend thousands of hours of hard work. Everyone could achieve a reasonably high score if they had spent the effort in it, given they were not demotivated during the process. I believe it is most…

Inside Black RockTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Isabel practised times tables and division with remainders, then worked on reading comprehension using short stories.

For Year 9 Jack, sessions focused on simplifying and expanding algebraic expressions as well as working with like terms in algebra.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Mia tackled solving linear equations using a CAS calculator and revised geometric sequences and arithmetic sequences through chapter exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for exams left most revision until the week before, which limited time for deep practice and meant she "needed to work on more questions prior to the test."

For a Year 8 student, working mainly on easier exercise numbers was noted: "try completing one or two of the difficult questions... much more effective than just the lower numbered exercises."

In Year 6 maths, messy written calculations sometimes made it hard to find errors; as observed, "needs to lay out his steps on paper." These habits led to last-minute stress and hidden mistakes during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Black Rock noticed Isabel, a Year 9 student, has begun to check her answers independently using the textbook and corrects her own mistakes—a big shift from relying on step-by-step guidance earlier this term.

In Year 11 maths, Grace started preparing questions ahead of each session and now confidently tackles financial maths problems she once found confusing.

Meanwhile, Gisele in Year 3 recently managed to read aloud for an extended period without hesitation and even remembered to pause at commas—something she struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Black Rock Primary School.
