In my opinion, a good tutor is one who aims to get to know the student personally in order to use the best approach towards understanding difficult topics and concepts. It’s also important to provide encouragement and support, as well as understand that students might get frustrated or discouraged if they are unable to easily grasp a concept. I…

One the most important things a maths tutor can do for their student is to teach them how to study and learn in the absence of any teacher or tutor in order to help them throughout their entire student life. A strength of mine is that I am able to communicate fairly complicated subjects succinctly and simply. This helps tutees in their…

A tutor should be patient, allowing students to build confidence in answering things alone and creating a basis for independent learning. They should also create a kind, open environment that adapts to all students needs. I am someone who struggled in certain aspects of school life so I had to adapt the information given to me in order to absorb…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student would be, firstly helping the student develop understandings of the subject at a fundamental level and then building up to a mastery from there. Secondly, being an assistant to help in any task they may deem to difficult to tackle alone, but not doing it for them, instead helping them…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is create a judgement free zone. We all know the feeling when we have asked someone for help and despite not understanding their clarification say that we do and that everything is fine. A judgement free zone is a space where students will ask questions until they are certain that they…

There are things taught at school that are not always assimilated by some of the students. This is because in school, they follow a standard setting or style of teaching which is not applicable for everyone but only for a certain percentage or average. Tutors are built for this specific reason. Tutors customise and plan a specific program for a…

It is important for a maths tutor to be a good listener and finding the best route to achieve the best result. Based on individuals, we need to understand their real struggle and making plan accordingly. Also being empathic to their problems, and encouraging. I'm patient and an active problem solver. I would seek different ways to help our student…

Inside Black RockTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Isabel practised times tables and division with remainders, then worked on reading comprehension using short stories.

For Year 9 Jack, sessions focused on simplifying and expanding algebraic expressions as well as working with like terms in algebra.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Mia tackled solving linear equations using a CAS calculator and revised geometric sequences and arithmetic sequences through chapter exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for exams left most revision until the week before, which limited time for deep practice and meant she "needed to work on more questions prior to the test."

For a Year 8 student, working mainly on easier exercise numbers was noted: "try completing one or two of the difficult questions... much more effective than just the lower numbered exercises."

In Year 6 maths, messy written calculations sometimes made it hard to find errors; as observed, "needs to lay out his steps on paper." These habits led to last-minute stress and hidden mistakes during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Black Rock noticed Isabel, a Year 9 student, has begun to check her answers independently using the textbook and corrects her own mistakes—a big shift from relying on step-by-step guidance earlier this term.

In Year 11 maths, Grace started preparing questions ahead of each session and now confidently tackles financial maths problems she once found confusing.

Meanwhile, Gisele in Year 3 recently managed to read aloud for an extended period without hesitation and even remembered to pause at commas—something she struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Black Rock Primary School.
