I think the most important thing I can do for a student is really just build their foundational understanding of the content. With a strong foundational understanding the students can be more confident and creative in their application in the concepts. I have two main strengths as a tutor. First, I bring a very strong working knowledge of the…

In general, I aim to build confidence and self-belief in a student in order to be independently successful. I find that most students are capable of understanding and learning difficult topics but a limited belief in their abilities prevents them from performing to their best ability. Available at any time. I feel I can relate and have fun with a…

To me, a tutor must be able to effectively communicate ideas to students in a manner that allows them to understand the concept. Understanding of more conceptually difficult topics is a difficulty every student faces and is ultimately the barrier against marks. Being able to really connect with a student and portray the idea at hand in a manner in…

A tutor has the opportunity to shape a students' mind, in more ways than one. Therefore, the most important thing a tutor can do is to make the best use of this opportunity and let the student discover the best version of themselves. I believe I am very patient, which is an important quality for any tutor. I do not mind even if I have to explain…

Academic impact is a primary objective of a tutor. The result for a student may not always be dramatic, going from F to A+, but it can also involve slow progress. Always staying engaged with the student, periodically inquiring about their comfort in learning the subject, and creating a conducive atmosphere for learning are essential. A tutor must…

A tutor must be able to understand the student's perspective. Students think in unique ways and a good tutor should encourage that level of thinking. I think it goes without saying that a tutor should help their student/s to understand concepts so that the student can improve on their grades. The most important thing is to identify the weak spots and missing links in the understanding of the basics and build up from that to create a permanent improvement rather than a rushed process just to get instant gratification. Tania, Bellevue Hill

Inside Bondi BeachTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lucas focused on solving linear equations and applying algebraic techniques to worded problems, working through examples step by step.

For Year 9, Sophie tackled simplifying polynomials and practiced solving both equations and inequalities, using worked solutions to check understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ava reviewed converting decimals into fractions (and vice versa) as well as basic algebra concepts, with extra practice provided for clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in advanced mathematics often skipped writing steps when solving algebra and surds, leading to confusion and hidden errors—he avoided showing working, which made sign mistakes harder to spot.

In a Year 10 trigonometry session, another student focused on memorizing processes rather than understanding concepts, so homework had to be restructured for deeper comprehension.

A primary student in Year 3 was distracted during word problem practice; the last fifteen minutes were spent trying to figure out what questions were really asking instead of practicing strategies.

One senior missed bringing homework, so lesson time was lost searching for missing sheets.

Recent Achievements

One Bondi Beach tutor noticed Jessy, a Year 11 student, recently overcoming her previous hesitation with graphing parabolas—she's now able to rewrite equations to instantly identify features like the vertex and axis of symmetry, which she'd struggled with before.

Tobey, in Year 9, has shifted from needing frequent help with ratios and long division involving decimals to independently solving these problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, Emily (Year 7) initially found starting complex linear equations daunting but now organises her work more logically and tackles the first steps on her own after working through examples together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Waverley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bondi Beach Public School.
