I think a tutor is like a life coach for a student. A tutor has the power to shape the life of a student. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student believe in himself. Once their is self believe a student can encounter any problem in his life. I think one of my biggest strengths as a tutor is that i am keen…

I consider understanding the student's problems and establishing a strong rapport to be the most important things. Tutors may be great teachers or have excellent knowledge of the content, but providing the correct and necessary information is of utmost importance. Understanding what may prevent a student from achieving as high as they want allows…

I think there are two main things a tutor can do for a student; maintain high grades and garner a positive attitude. It is imperative as a tutor's job to help the student maintain or achieve high grades in the particular area of study. However, high academic standards are not simply enough. It is also important for a tutor to build up an…

Give understanding to areas where there is confusion. This can be educational and specifically for the subject they're being tutored for, or just in general about careers and post school education. A tutor needs to be understanding so that the student is not overwhelmed and can comfortably learn the topics and ask questions no matter how small or big. A tutor also needs to be adaptable. Each student is different, this requires the tutor to change attitude and learning styles. I am able to understand situations from the students perspective.…

As mentioned above, identifying the best ways a student learns is key to tutoring effectively. Moreover, being able to make students enjoy learning and seek further knowledge themselves is something that a tutor must do in order to be successful, as when the student is motivated and actively want to learn, they will benefit the most. This may…

The most important things I consider a tutor can do is to cultivate their interests in that subject as well as the abilities in thinking and studying other than this subject. I am easy-going and patient. Also, I prefer to think in the ways or from their perspectives that they are thinking. So, I can guide them in the way that it is easier for them…

To be there to support the student academically and psychologically. Listening with patience. Teaching isn't a one way process. The student and the tutor both need to engage with each other. In my opinion, the most important thing we can do for a student is not just to teach but to also listen. To ensure that the student can make the most out of each session, its best to first understand the areas that the student is having trouble with and then to work as a team to increase their understanding in these area. My strength would be the…

I think to be a successful tutor requires the tutor to be able to communicate with the student and build a rapport with them so that the student understands they are in a comfortable environment to learn in and they can share their weaknesses with their tutor. Additionally, it is essential that the tutor holds the student's concentration by…

One of the most essential ingredients is chemistry. A good tutor will take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. They will be caring and compassionate, but also professional and organized. Having a good rapport with the student will move a tutor from good to great. Tutors should check for understanding as they go…

Inside Box Hill NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia practised converting fractions to decimals and back, as well as tackling worded ratio questions.

In Year 10, Ethan worked on Methods quadratics test preparation and revising how to complete the square for quadratic equations.

For Year 12 Specialist Maths, Michael focused on trigonometry with reciprocal functions and began learning about vectors, using step-by-step problem-solving with diagrams where needed.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, as one tutor noted, "left several questions blank on a recent measurement test," showing that time management during assessments is an obstacle—rushing led to skipped checks and unanswered items.

In Year 11 Physics, unfamiliarity with units and isolating variables in equations meant extra time was spent figuring out basics rather than tackling application problems.

For a younger primary student, muddled working out in long division made it easy to mix up digits or lose track of steps, especially under test conditions.

The frustration of erasing errors instead of clarifying working slowed progress when faced with trickier multiplication.

Recent Achievements

One Box Hill North tutor noticed Sarah, a senior student, tackling integration: after initially struggling to reverse the "power rule," she's now independently applying u-substitution to solve more complex integrals.

In Year 10, Salvatore had previously hesitated with quadratic equations but recently managed to factorise tricky cases and even argued convincingly when no solutions existed—a big step from last term.

Meanwhile, Daniel in primary school used to need reminders on basic multiplication, but this week he multiplied three-digit numbers smoothly and converted ratios into decimals by himself.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Lauren seems to be going well and most importantly is engaging with Steph and feeling better about Maths in general. We are very happy with Steph so far. She is a lovely girl who is always punctual and the communication between us is excellent. And I think Lauren looks forward to her sessions with Steph, which can only be a positive!

She has been SUPER professional. I would recommend her without hesitation. She is responsible, has made a connection with my son, has communicated with me and kept me informed all the time. She is a great asset. We look forward to working with her in the future.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Doncaster Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Box Hill North Primary School.
