The goal of tutoring, in some sense, should be to equip students with the skills to no longer need tutoring. I believe this is best achieved by allowing the student to choose study-related goals, and help them take achievable steps in order to get there. As their competence increases in proximity to the larger goal, so too does their confidence as…

I believe as a tutor, it is important to teach the subject to the student in a way that is enjoyable while still delivering the knowledge across. It is important that the tutor is not simply feeding the student equations or tricks to achieve good marks, but that the tutor is helping the student understand the topic enough to be able to solve…

It is to not only to help them get the right answers, it is to make them understand the ‘why’ so they can think critically and solve problems independently. A good tutor also creates a safe space for their student to ask question without…

A tutor should be able to identify the weaknesses and strengths of a student and lift their confidence first. An excellent tutor has patience to work with the student until the student's needs are achieved. Giving positive feedback when they present their work, which will then stimulate their work ethic. One of the most essential ingredients is chemistry. A good tutor will take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. They will be caring and compassionate, but also professional and organized. Having a good rapport with the student will move a tutor from good to great. In my opinion, the relationship beyond subject tutoring is the most important aspect of a tutor. A great tutor must have the ability to connect deeply with the students to give them personalised teaching methods and materials, which ultimately increase both efficiency and effectiveness in teaching. In order of doing so, a tutor must have a great…

The most important area that a tutor can provide a student is to make sure they are in a comfortable and non-judgmental environment. I believe this is the first step in helping those that are not too keen in school or homework. After providing a friendly setting, this would lay the foundation that would help enable the student to develop a…

Inside Box Hill SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Summer practised reading aloud with expressive punctuation and worked on multiplication, division, and order of operations using BIDMAS.

In Year 9, Jolie completed a timed selective-school style maths test and reviewed errors in both ACER Maths and Science practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student covered simultaneous equations from the Cambridge VCE Methods 1&2 textbook and was introduced to basic trigonometry concepts along with calculator skills relevant for VCE Methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which made it hard to spot calculation slips. This meant more time spent searching for mistakes instead of building confidence.

During Year 7 fractions and ratios, answers were sometimes written without full working—especially when converting between percentages and decimals—which left the logic behind his solutions unclear.

In senior functions, there was a tendency to avoid writing out all transformations or endpoints when graphing hybrid functions; this led to confusion mid-question and slowed progress.

When worded problems appeared in both Years 8 and 11, hesitation with identifying key terms often blocked him from forming equations at all.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Box Hill South recently saw Annabel, a senior student, move from confusion to independence with logarithms—she now solves exponentials with different bases on her own after previously needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, James (Year 10) was struggling to interpret worded maths questions but now independently translates them into algebraic expressions and substitutes values accurately, a shift from earlier hesitation and guesswork.

In Year 5, Jacob had difficulty handling negative numbers; using number lines during his {Box Hill South tutoring} session helped him visualise the process so well that he now completes these calculations unaided.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kingswood College.
