1. A tutor should understand the different needs of different students and find a way of teaching that best suits them. So preparing suitable material for different students are very important. 2. Never teach to the test. It not only diminishes the student’s interest in the subject but also prevents them from developing further understanding…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence to be an independent learner. I want students to gradually build their skills and knowledge to not feel like they need assistance all of the time or that they just can't do it. I see tutoring as also being a coaching or mentoring role as well as your not just…

A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. I think it is very important to ask the student if they’re still attentive and understanding after every while of teaching. This is because of the student have lost concentration, they will not be able to learn anything and the lesson will be effectively useless. Thus it is important to sometimes insert some humour or times to stretch to regain…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students feel safe to try, fail, and grow. Many students come into tutoring thinking they are "just bad at maths," and it's our job as tutors to help break that mindset. From my own experience, I know how powerful it is when someone takes the time to understand your gaps, explain things at…

I believe a tutor is a person who is there to support, guide and encourage students to not just settle for an easy answer but question and discover new things. There are two most essential things that a tutor should do for a student: motivation and guidance. A student only find a tutor when he finds difficulties in learning a subject and is not confident in taking the exams. Therefore, the first thing that each tutor needs to do is to encourage the students to study and face their own problems.…

A tutor's primary goal should be to help the student understand the material they are learning. This might involve explaining concepts in different ways, providing examples, or breaking things down into smaller, more manageable chunks. Being able to remain patient and calm when working with students is my strength, as it allows me to be more…

Inside Box Hill SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Summer practised reading aloud with expressive punctuation and worked on multiplication, division, and order of operations using BIDMAS.

In Year 9, Jolie completed a timed selective-school style maths test and reviewed errors in both ACER Maths and Science practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student covered simultaneous equations from the Cambridge VCE Methods 1&2 textbook and was introduced to basic trigonometry concepts along with calculator skills relevant for VCE Methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which made it hard to spot calculation slips. This meant more time spent searching for mistakes instead of building confidence.

During Year 7 fractions and ratios, answers were sometimes written without full working—especially when converting between percentages and decimals—which left the logic behind his solutions unclear.

In senior functions, there was a tendency to avoid writing out all transformations or endpoints when graphing hybrid functions; this led to confusion mid-question and slowed progress.

When worded problems appeared in both Years 8 and 11, hesitation with identifying key terms often blocked him from forming equations at all.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Box Hill South recently saw Annabel, a senior student, move from confusion to independence with logarithms—she now solves exponentials with different bases on her own after previously needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, James (Year 10) was struggling to interpret worded maths questions but now independently translates them into algebraic expressions and substitutes values accurately, a shift from earlier hesitation and guesswork.

In Year 5, Jacob had difficulty handling negative numbers; using number lines during his {Box Hill South tutoring} session helped him visualise the process so well that he now completes these calculations unaided.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kingswood College.
