I believe the most important thing a tutor must do for a student is to really take time to listen to and understand the areas that they are struggling with so that they are not giving up valuable out of school time and not making progress - I firmly believe that play and rest is just as important as studying and working when you are a primary and…

Above all else, I think a tutor can give a student confidence in whatever work students have due. Once their confidence is built up, they will respond better to not just tutoring outside, but also teaching in the classroom and result to a deeper understanding of the content. I think I am well versed in most subjects, and am an excellent…

I think patience and carefulness are important. When you were teaching a student, you need to listen their questions clearly and patiently, try to explain them in a simplified way. I am patient and willing to help others with their problems. I am a volunteer in Uni, my major task is to help new residents to settle down and build a inclusive…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Students who reach out for tutoring often do so because they need or want additional support, meaning it is essential to listen to what the student's goals are, what they may be struggling with, and how they feel they learn best. One of the benefits of tutoring is…

The most essential thing is patience. Understanding that your student is gonna require extra effort and time in making sure they understand concepts, patience allows a tutor to take time explaining concepts making it the most important thing as a tutor. I think a good tutor needs to be patient with the student. There are times that the teaching process does not go as smoothly as planned but listening helps better understand the student as well as his point of view. I have my own teaching plan and note for every student. I find myself good at spotting main points that student should focus on and…

I consider being a mentor as an important quality in terms of teaching. Without being a reliable consultant, I don't believe a tutor can bring out the best from students. Being a mentor also means setting an example for them; how to manage own study habits and schedules. I will be there to support students in various way, not only for academic…

A tutor's job is to teach. However, I do believe that the student's experience during their time learning most important. From my observations, students will not really pay attention if they are not interested or if they are not having a good time, which is why, in my opinion, it is important that students are having a good time while they are…

As someone who grew up with a lot of questions in a very square-minded tuition culture, I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be there for them to help fill in their knowledge gaps for them, should there be any. The capacity to communicate in such a way that the learner feels driven, excited, and confident in their ability to master and enjoy whatever challenges come along is one of the most crucial personal attributes of a competent instructor. Its a very open question in my point of view but, if I want to say it as brief as I can its backing them up making them reach a certain level and then teaching them how to fish instead of just giving them fish and when they learn how to fish giving them tips for catching bigger fish. Understanding what they understand and don't. If you don't adapt accordingly, not only will it take longer, but even if you can help them understand, you won't foster a sense of confidence in the student for further studies. Adaptability and a deeper understanding of the subject matter I'm teaching, which lets me approach problems from different…

Inside Brandon ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Daniel practised solving linear equations and finding the gradient and y-intercept of lines, including working through examples using coordinate points.

In Year 10, Jessica focused on quadratic equations—completing the square and transforming quadratics into different forms—as well as transformations of functions from the Methods course.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Liam tackled rates and algebraic fractions from the Specialist Mathematics syllabus, along with further practice on function transformations to support his advanced studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student tackling quadratics hesitated to show written steps, even when not strictly required; as one tutor observed, "writing out logic helps avoid repeated sign errors," but the urge for neatness led to gaps in working.

In a Year 9 session on conditional probability, a reliance on the CAS calculator without careful input checking caused confusion—incorrect answers went unnoticed until rework was needed.

Meanwhile, a primary student repeatedly left homework incomplete in fractions and times tables, which made later sessions less confident and slowed skill growth. The missing practice showed up during live questions: pauses, doubt, erasing instead of reasoning.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brandon Park noticed Maddison, a Year 10 student, now sketches clear diagrams to break down challenging linear relation problems—something she previously hesitated to do.

Jack, in Year 11, recently tackled transformations of graphs with far less prompting than before and worked through complex equations independently.

In primary sessions, Olivia has started placing her numbers correctly when multiplying large values; just last week, she confidently completed long multiplication without mixing up digit placement—a big shift from her earlier confusion.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glen Waverley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Waverley South Primary School.
