As a student myself I understand the importance of being surrounded by people that want to support you in your learning. I am an excellent listener and have an immense amount of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is encourage a love for learning. By providing a safe learning space, it is imperative that a tutor encourages their students to ask questions and to be inquisitive, as this means the students will approach learning with an open mindset rather than a closed one. Furthermore, it is important…

Help him to go further and improve himself by providing better advice than a classroom teacher. As a tutor, I would be able to focus on my student to understand his strengths and weaknesses better than anyone. With this knowledge the tutor could provide advices focused on how to correct the student and allow him to have better scores easily. I'm…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence and make them interested in the things they are learning. A lot of times, when we are struggling or bad at something, it makes us dislike it, which may make it harder for us. First, it is essential that a tutor provides support tailored to that student's needs, learning process, and interests. Second, a tutor must approach sessions with patience and understanding, while avoiding negativity and behavior that may discourage their student. Overall, I think creating an environment where a student feels seen and heard by…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. To trust that the students do have the capabilities of learning and figuring out problems on their own and that they can grow. Giving the students space while still being there to push them in the right direction is the best way to help a student as we want the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build not only a survey-able understanding of the topic, but hopefully a genuine interest and passion. This might not be realistic 100% of the time, but creating actual curiosity and interest beyond just completing work out of necessity can not only be highly rewarding for the student but will…

An important thing would be to instil a sense of confidence in a student about a particular subject, theory, or whatever it is that they are struggling with. Without confidence, even if a student may know the content or understand the theory, it can be difficult to do well in that subject. This is achieved by repeating a concept or practising it a…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to tailor the teaching content to the student's specific needs. Every student has unique strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles, and a one-size-fits-all approach often falls short. By customizing lessons, a tutor can address individual gaps in knowledge, reinforce areas of…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them and work with them, not at them. Tutoring for me is not just about regurgitating the same things as their classroom teacher, especially if it is a student who is struggling and the classroom approach is not working for them. I tutor in a way to make the student…

A tutor should use as simple language as possible because using fancy language can make them loose interest as they won't know the words. Michael has made a huge difference already, and we are very happy with his work so far. Mia is listening to him and there is some great mutual respect happening. I love that when mia doesn't know something he ensures to not make her feel silly. It has helped her confidence Immensely.

Inside BraybrookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Chelsea focused on surds and the first five laws of indices, then practised Pythagoras' Theorem for both finding hypotenuse and shorter sides, using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

For Year 9, Ruby tackled negative indices and exponential equations before moving into graphs of exponential growth and decay.

Meanwhile, primary student Ethan (Grade 5) completed NAPLAN numeracy practice, including dot plots and multi-step worded questions to build confidence with data displays and problem-solving.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student often avoided writing out working when solving linear equations, saying "I can do this in my head," which led to missed sign errors and confusion during revision.

In a senior class, a Year 11 found herself relying heavily on her calculator for trigonometry but struggled on non-calculator tests—she wasn't confident with manual division or recalling times tables.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner left homework incomplete after a busy week; gaps in fraction skills persisted into lessons. Each instance left the student frustrated, searching for answers that could have been clearer with stronger habits.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Braybrook noticed that Chelsea, a Year 10 student, has gone from struggling with surds to confidently simplifying them and now independently applies trigonometric ratios to complex worded problems—a big leap from earlier sessions where she hesitated with multi-step processes.

Sasha, also in high school, recently started sketching parabolas by completing the square without prompts and tackled all questions on her test, even when unsure—showing new initiative compared to her previous reluctance.

Meanwhile, Camilla in Year 5 has begun creating dot plots herself and now explains her answers out loud after previously staying quiet during problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caroline Chisholm Catholic College.
