A tutor can guide a student, by outlining what their goals should be at the end of the learning the subject and how to get there. They can set them worksheets to complete and notes to further understand the subject. Most of all, I think as a maths tutor, the most important think is to give constructive feedback, and to let students know their…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is understand their true needs. Sometimes students need more than just a teacher who is repeating themselves to help them understand things. Tutors should be trying different techniques and approaches that better suit that student, and understand the weaknesses of that student to better…

Guide them and help them build their confidence as they learn. To a degree, that allows them to then learn on their own and become independent. The best part of being a maths tutor is when you realize your student no longer needs you. It's easy for me to position myself in someone else's shoes. I'm usually very good at identifying what my students…

Really listening to the students' struggles and concerns with an open mindset and responding in an informative yet not condescending manner enables the students to learn and develop their knowledge. I would do this by listening and learning how the student learns and taking the necessary steps to help the student feel comfortable and understanding…

Its good to be able to use a formula or understand how mathematical theories work but if you do not understand the fundamental blocks of which that concept is built on you will not be getting very far. Thats why I believe in not only understanding what a formula does but why it works. My ability to find where the problem is in a student and…

I consider the most important role of a maths tutor is to grow students confidence in subjects via encouragement. In order to strengthen students knowledge and abilities, a tutor should ensure that the student believes they can improve their understanding of a subject and trusts that their extra effort does pay off. The most important thing a maths tutor could do is to understand the student they are teaching. Not all students are the same and their needs aren't either. So knowing them can help the student grow in their studies. I am currently studying a Bachelors of Education (Secondary) and Bachelors of Science, as such I have both the theoretical knowledge…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for the student is listening to their questions and ensuring every explanation is understood. This ensures that the child not only acquires new knowledge but can apply it to their homework and grow as a student in maths. Also, a tutor must actively grow their methods of teaching, not using one…

Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

The Tutor should have a lot of patience while teaching children, as each child is different from one other. Tutor should understand each student's ability and talent and motivate them to do further in their own field. It should be the tutor's job to go to each student individually and ask if they are good with study materials and understanding…

Inside Briar HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sadé worked on long multiplication with 2-3 digit numbers and tackled multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Year 6 student Indie focused on mastering the 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 times tables before applying this knowledge to solve long multiplication questions with larger numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Jamie spent the lesson revising decimal operations—adding and subtracting decimals using vertical algorithms—and began practising these skills through worded problem scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 5 student repeatedly forgot to carry numbers during long multiplication, as noted: "she would occasionally forget to add the carried numbers or misalign the columns in her working out."

In Year 7 maths, one learner needed frequent reminders about area formulas and sometimes mixed them up, leading to extra time spent correcting answers instead of building fluency.

For a Year 8 student, challenges with interpreting worded problems meant they often needed guidance before attempting solutions.

When presented with mixed-order times tables in Year 6, another struggled to recall facts quickly, slowing progress on division tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Briar Hill tutoring session saw a high school student, Sadé, who used to hesitate with long division now tackle harder questions confidently and even worked efficiently with divisors like 12 and 20.

Another win came from Indie in Year 6: she had previously struggled to apply short division independently but recently solved multi-digit problems by herself, showing much more self-assurance.

In Year 4 English, John—who once guessed at unfamiliar words—has started sounding them out methodically when reading aloud, making it through passages that were stumbling blocks before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Diamond Valley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Briar Hill Primary School.
