The tutor can guide the student when they are facing difficulties. It is not the tutor's job to answer questions for the student, but rather to help the student make sense of how to solve a problem. I have a background in mathematics, both in my undergrad and as my Masters. I have experience answering questions in Course Hero, where I have an 80%…

I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. Additionally, it is extremely important to make friends with the students, as this is necessary for proper engagement. I am not afraid to do some research when it comes to getting a student to…

Understanding the weak points and listening to their problems helps establish trust between the tutor and the student. This makes a tutor approachable. I believe that there are two crucial things that tutors can and should do for students. Firstly, each tutor should present the rationale and the logic while explaining new concepts to students rather than make them memorize and automatically follow the rules or steps. Students should understand what they do and that is the responsibility of…

First and foremost helping the student to develop logic, as logic is everywhere, and making them understand each problem before solving it. The most important way would be to change the way of learning. Finally, the main part would be to increase their grades, so that they can enroll in world-reputed universities and colleges in the near future…

Understand the student's needs: A good tutor should take the time to understand the student's strengths, weaknesses, learning style, and goals. This helps the tutor tailor their approach to best support the student's individual needs. 1>Expertise in the subject matter: The ability to teach a subject effectively requires a deep understanding of the…

Inside Briar HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sadé worked on long multiplication with 2-3 digit numbers and tackled multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Year 6 student Indie focused on mastering the 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 times tables before applying this knowledge to solve long multiplication questions with larger numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Jamie spent the lesson revising decimal operations—adding and subtracting decimals using vertical algorithms—and began practising these skills through worded problem scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 5 student repeatedly forgot to carry numbers during long multiplication, as noted: "she would occasionally forget to add the carried numbers or misalign the columns in her working out."

In Year 7 maths, one learner needed frequent reminders about area formulas and sometimes mixed them up, leading to extra time spent correcting answers instead of building fluency.

For a Year 8 student, challenges with interpreting worded problems meant they often needed guidance before attempting solutions.

When presented with mixed-order times tables in Year 6, another struggled to recall facts quickly, slowing progress on division tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Briar Hill tutoring session saw a high school student, Sadé, who used to hesitate with long division now tackle harder questions confidently and even worked efficiently with divisors like 12 and 20.

Another win came from Indie in Year 6: she had previously struggled to apply short division independently but recently solved multi-digit problems by herself, showing much more self-assurance.

In Year 4 English, John—who once guessed at unfamiliar words—has started sounding them out methodically when reading aloud, making it through passages that were stumbling blocks before.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Great Tutoring and marks are an improvement. Thank you for your persistence and patience!

The tutoring is going quite well. We were really impressed with his proactive approach in asking for her naplan results and course outline from her teacher so he work in line with what she will be learning in class.

I would like to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to tutor this year. I have mentored a bunch of wonderful kids who have all made great improvements with their grades and work ethic. In addition, I have seen them become more and more confident with each lesson which has been incredibly rewarding.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Diamond Valley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Briar Hill Primary School.
