I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel safe to learn. That means creating an environment where it’s okay to not know something, to ask questions, and even to make mistakes. When students aren’t worried about being judged, they’re way more likely to engage and actually enjoy the learning process. Beyond…

The most important things I can do for students are to go through the problems with them step by step, to solve their problems in learning, and to prove they have the ability to solve the problems themselves. I have a PhD qualification in Materials Engineering and I am good at mathematics, engineering, and physics subjects. I have extensive…

The most important thing for a tutor is to be a role model. A tutor should possess enough knowledge and patience to help teach students not just the subject but also habits that pave way for a better life. I believe my patience as a tutor is the most important. I love to teach in different ways in order to help students understand and learn…

A tutor can develop a passion of learning in a student so that a student can learn and grow even when the teacher is with the student or not. Its similar to teach a person how to fish instead giving them fish to eat. If student learn how to learn on their own, how to solve problems, and what should be the approach to a problem then it is more than…

To support and give great motivation to the student is the most important thing. Having the thought that everybody can learn and be able to success in learning if the student found interest in the subject. Explaining the concepts clearly and easily along with appropriate examples are the must for a tutor. But, more importantly, a tutor should help students cultivate good habits like hard work, discipline, confidence, time management etc. By doing so, a student not only grows academically but also personally. And this can help them in the future. I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are assisting them with their studies and provide comfort. I do not think tutors should spoon-feed answers to students as that will not help them fully understand and learn. Other than that, I believe the ability to comfort and reassure students is extremely important for tutors. I have met…

I believe striking a balance in how the tutor interacts with a student is key. Being able to listen and identify a student's problem areas, as well as being firm enough to hold their attention is vital. A good tutor can set expectations tailored to a student's abilities and with them raise them while boosting their confidence. Overall personality…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them patient, let them know that it is okay to make mistakes and encourage them to continue to learn and practice in order to master a skill. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

First and foremost, I would argue that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide motivation and encouragement; cultivating the student's desire to learn and succeed. If this is achieved, academic success simply becomes a by-product. Secondly, a tutor must act as a resource that complements learning within a school…

It is highly important for a tutor to be able to listen to where a student is struggling and use this information to be able to adapt their teachings to each student personally. Passing on knowledge keeping in mind the strength, weaknesses and the time required for the student to grasp the content that is being communicated. Inside BrightonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Archie revised area and perimeter of different shapes for a zoo project, using practical examples.

In Year 10, Reagan focused on polynomial operations—specifically division—and discussed approaches to Physics questions around atoms and radiation.

For Year 12, Jack worked through exponentials and logarithms by debriefing a quiz, then tackled exam-style applications involving log laws to strengthen understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Methods student was "reluctant to rely on algebra to solve problems as he can do 99% of stuff in his head," which led to missed steps and made error tracing difficult—especially in polynomial division.

In Physics (Year 12), a student didn't complete set homework on worked examples for constant acceleration, meaning less time could be spent consolidating challenging concepts during the session.

For a Year 6 student, online lessons meant the tutor "couldn't see his working out"—making it hard to spot process gaps when tackling algebra. The result: real-time feedback was limited, slowing progress.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brighton noticed one Year 10 student who had always hesitated to ask for help during sessions now openly stopped and checked his understanding when working through challenging synthetic division questions, instead of guessing as before.

In a senior physics session, another student made a breakthrough with Hubble's law after struggling previously—she explained the connection herself between mass-energy equivalence and EMR entirely in her own words.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to mix up fraction subtraction was able to solve all problems independently involving subtracting fractions from whole numbers without prompts and even checked his answers independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brighton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brighton Grammar School.
