One of the best things a physics tutor can do for a student is offer encouragement and support. Beyond simply teaching the material effectively, tutors have to recognise that for the student, there are compounding events and pressures that they face during high school. Ultimately, it will fall on the tutor to ensure that the student enjoys being…

In my opinion the most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to build a longer term work practice to allow the student to be successful without tuition in the future. This requires building confidence, breaking down problems, setting goals, and effectively managing time. I build working relationships with students very…

I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. A tutor's responsibility, in my opinion, should be to identify why the student may be struggling in that specific area of academics and then to adjust their teaching approach and technique to cater for…

Tutors can help students develop the knowledge required for their schooling, but also help students develop the skills to learn efficiently and to a deeper level. This sets up good foundations for the future, if the student would like to study more in the future in the field, and will be helpful for future endeavors (university for example). I am…

A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. Tutors can be a reason to guide the students in the right direction. Sometimes, a student might need a tiny little nudge to get them on track and tutors can be or are the right persons for that. A tutor can be a friend guiding the student in every obstacle they come across. A tutor can also be a role model for the students by creating a long…

Inside BrightonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Archie revised area and perimeter of different shapes for a zoo project, using practical examples.

In Year 10, Reagan focused on polynomial operations—specifically division—and discussed approaches to Physics questions around atoms and radiation.

For Year 12, Jack worked through exponentials and logarithms by debriefing a quiz, then tackled exam-style applications involving log laws to strengthen understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Methods student was "reluctant to rely on algebra to solve problems as he can do 99% of stuff in his head," which led to missed steps and made error tracing difficult—especially in polynomial division.

In Physics (Year 12), a student didn't complete set homework on worked examples for constant acceleration, meaning less time could be spent consolidating challenging concepts during the session.

For a Year 6 student, online lessons meant the tutor "couldn't see his working out"—making it hard to spot process gaps when tackling algebra. The result: real-time feedback was limited, slowing progress.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brighton noticed one Year 10 student who had always hesitated to ask for help during sessions now openly stopped and checked his understanding when working through challenging synthetic division questions, instead of guessing as before.

In a senior physics session, another student made a breakthrough with Hubble's law after struggling previously—she explained the connection herself between mass-energy equivalence and EMR entirely in her own words.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to mix up fraction subtraction was able to solve all problems independently involving subtracting fractions from whole numbers without prompts and even checked his answers independently.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Since working with David she's improved out of sight and is now first in her year. She understands questions better & as a result her marks have improved in other subjects across the board.

Nathan's marks have improved considerably over the past few months and i have noticed that he has a new-found confidence. He has discovered that if he applies himself he will succeed.

Thank you. I agree, Matt appears to be all that you say he is and my daughter was happy with the first session. She already understands some things better.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brighton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brighton Grammar School.
