I think an essential thing a chemistry tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being…

The most important things a chemistry tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam…

Besides grades, I would say that a chemistry tutor is also essentially teaching the student life skills such as responsibility and perseverance. I had this unmotivated student. He wouldn't complete the homework that I had given him and often fell asleep in class. I started to find out the reason behind his behavior and I used it to my…

I believe that teaching is not about pumping a student with exam papers or to make them memorise the answers and get good grades, for my satisfaction. But about really making sure the student understands a concept, so that they have a strong foundation and can apply to it many different question styles. This will actively stimulate creativity and…

The most important thing that a chemistry tutor can do for the students is to motivate and encourage them to do their best. I believe that results are mostly achieved through the effort of the students themselves, so as a tutor I try my best to cover all the concepts and to provide my students with support materials, but I also make sure that my…

Listen. Every student excels in some ways and does not in others. This emphasises the importance for a chemistry tutor to present ideas in ways which allow the student to learn them in the most efficient and effective ways. This also ensures that the tutor does not repeat anything the student already knows and identifies what the student has yet…

As a chemistry tutor it is crucial to deeply understand the ambitions and goals of each student; their current level, and where they want to end up or what they want to achieve. This helps the tutor and student to create realistic but valuable goals, and underlying expectations throughout the experience. I think that as a tutor, I have strengths…

I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. Modern curriculum is mostly based on a thought process that works for most students. But not for all, and school teachers don't usually have the capacity to take care of all the students individually. That's where a chemistry tutor can help. Everybody thinks about and understand scientific ideas and theories in their own, personal way. A tutor…

Local Reviews

Marysa has been tutoring my 17 year old son for 1 year, and now also using her for tutoring my 15 year old daughter. Rapport was quickly established between each of them, which is not difficult due to Marysa's maturity, knowledge, respect, and her unwavering support to each child. Every single lesson is met with a bubbly, up beat, and smiling tutor. The advancement in my children's skills, knowledge, and confidence is immeasurable. After a difficult start to finding the correct fit with a tutor, we have been provided a jewel with Marysa.

Inside BrightonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ella revised multiples of 3 and practiced area and perimeter calculations for both regular and irregular shapes.

Year 6 student Lucas worked on comparing decimal numbers to three places, explored improper fractions versus mixed numbers, and practiced expressing decimals as fractions using visual aids.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Max tackled NAPLAN numeracy practice questions with calculator use, focusing on relationships between fractions, decimals, and percentages alongside key fraction terminology and equivalence.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 maths, one student repeatedly skipped labeling headings on place value boards ("hundredths to Hundred Thousands"), making it difficult to organize decimal work.

During a Year 8 algebra session, a notebook was left at home—so examples were jotted on loose scraps and later misplaced.

In English (Year 7), over-erasing and correcting narrative drafts led to lost ideas and slower progress; as noted: "She erased sentences so often her story stalled mid-way."

For Year 11 problem-solving, working only familiar fraction drills meant multi-step worded questions remained unsolved—confidence dropped after repeated setbacks in class discussions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Brighton noted that Brooke, a high school student, moved from relying on instructions to independently constructing triangles using a compass and reasoning through the process herself.

In another session, Prajna (Year 8) initially hesitated with index notation but quickly picked up the concept and solved calculator-based problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, Jye in Year 5 shifted from rushing homework to taking time for self-correction—he now pauses to re-read texts and uses decoding strategies when faced with unfamiliar words. Last week, he completed all spelling activities and set out his decimal calculations more clearly than before.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Timothy is very happy with how things are going with Jerome.  Tim feels like he is learning and is comfortable with Jerome who I have found to be a very polite young man.  Tim has not had any tests or exams since he began tutoring, I'm sure we will see an improvement at that time.

Hi Erica, everything good so far. Isaac is lovely and Adam appears to be relating well to him. He has had 2 recent Math tests and has seemed more relaxed about them so I think we're seeing some short term gains already.

Hi Erica, Yes all seems to be going well with Sean's tutoring. He responds well to Andy. Thanks

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brighton Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brighton Primary School.
