The most important thing a tutor can do with a student is give them confidence in their abilities and a growth mindset. Teaching students material is important, but spoonfeeding them leads to boredom, dissatisfaction, and poor results when tests ask complicated questions. By listening, offering encouragement, and being careful about when to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student recognise their own potential. Alongside teaching them, it is just as important to ensure they realise they are capable of figuring things out on their own too (of course with some support!). This enables them to try their best and set the highest goals they can which is what I would…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is encourage a love for learning. By providing a safe learning space, it is imperative that a tutor encourages their students to ask questions and to be inquisitive, as this means the students will approach learning with an open mindset rather than a closed one. Furthermore, it is important…

Inside BroadmeadowsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Salma worked on maths skills including estimation, rounding numbers, and understanding ratios using online quizzes, and also began drafting a personal journey essay for English.

Year 10 student Wellson focused on solving simultaneous equations with matrices in maths and practiced analytical writing by drafting essays about climate change and the film Sunset Boulevard, receiving feedback to improve his structure.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Abby prepared for her English comparative essay by researching The Dressmaker and The Crucible, compiling notes from both texts, and planning out practice essays.

Recent Challenges

After a Year 11 English SAC, one student struggled to organise essay arguments, despite clear teacher feedback. This made it harder to show logical progression in responses under exam pressure.

In maths (Year 12), missing a graphics calculator slowed practice and limited the chance to attempt complex exercises at home.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student preparing for an oral presentation felt their confidence dip after forgetting key points during rehearsal; the feedback given was not fully used in follow-up practice.

As revision demands grew before exams, planning and time management sometimes slipped—especially when balancing schoolwork with outside commitments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Broadmeadows noticed Wellson, a high school student, has moved from struggling to organise his essay ideas to independently drafting well-structured essays and even refining his research approach—a big shift from earlier sessions where planning was a hurdle.

Abby, also in high school, used to feel overwhelmed by assessments but now creates detailed revision schedules and compiles notes ahead of time without prompting.

Meanwhile, Mahmoud (Year 5) has started asking more questions about science topics during sessions instead of staying quiet when unsure; last week he eagerly explained spacetime using objects around the room.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very happy with Elissa. Matteo likes her and is very happy to work with her each week. He is definitely gaining more confidence. Thank you!

Kareem is so happy with John. He is very comfortable with him and feels a lot more confident. I can see the difference in Kareem's attitude, thank you.

Kelly is a fantastic tutor & lovely person who clicked with Emily immediately and Emily noticed her own improvement within days. Emily sat her Maths semester exam 3 weeks later after having Kelly there was a big improvement!!! Thank you for referring Kelly to Emily and we look forward to having her tutor Emily for as long as we can!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Roxburgh College-The Gateway School.
