I am friendly and can indulge the students in the sessions very well with a little informal conversations in between so that they…

Student is not always smart enough to understand everything they have been taught once. The most important thing for me is full attention to the student. By showing that i actually care about the student, i would try to find out the hobbies of a student which i can try to incorporate into my lessons . I am confident enough to provide clear…

A tutor has the responsibility to not only teach the subject they are teaching but at every instant they are building up the character, ethics, morale in a classroom. The most important thing is to also look into aspects of team building, sharing, caring and especially kindness which these young minds will take with them along with mathematics…

A tutor can show a student why instead of just how. Students step into academics and are shown what to do and how to do it, but they don't understand why until much later on in life. A tutor is in a way a parent, trying to teach their child. Essentially, their future depends on how well they have been prepared, no matter how small the…

To not make them feel dumb. Students should be able to safely ask their questions without insecurity or fear of being looked down on. I'm try to be patient and understanding. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. That's why, as a tutor, I would do my very best to be friendly and comfortable with the student, and make sure they can enjoy learning…

I think a tutor's only job is to motivate their students and let them develop their own interests in the subject.  I think once you motivate them and make them think about the subject on their own, your job is done.  From then on, it's a matter of aiding their intellectual journey.  And I think what enables tutors to fulfil that job is using…

Critcal thinking and the method of approching to problems are what I think the most important in doing maths. Answers to the problem without critcal thinking is generally useless. Encourage students to think critically and learn independently. I believe this to be core aspects of teaching which is largely avoided today. A good mentor is one that enables students to solve problems on their own, and supports students in discovering their interests and appreciation for the subject beyond their tutoring session. Fostering an environment of growth is key: tutors need to encourage the student to ask questions, set realistic standards and recognise failure as the opportunity to learn. Seeing these mindsets shift within students is extremely rewarding as a teacher. In my experience of tutoring, it is less about showing the student what you know and…

Inside BrooklynTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Vincent reviewed mixed numbers, area and volume, percentages, ratios, and introductory algebra while also practising reading comprehension and grammar.

In Year 10, Daniel worked on graphing linear inequalities and representing them visually, alongside simplifying expressions in algebra.

For Year 11, Alyssa focused on completing the square for quadratics as well as exploring the Sine Rule and Cosine Rule in trigonometry using step-by-step problem sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often arrived without their class notes or required materials, which made it hard to bridge knowledge gaps—significant gaps in their knowledge that will require further study.

In Year 11 Chemistry, one student missed several weeks due to injury and needed intensive test preparation; this left little time for developing independent revision habits.

For a Year 7 learner, skipping careful reading of worded maths problems meant solutions were sometimes off-target.

Meanwhile, a senior student working on trigonometry lacked confidence with unit circle values and hesitated to attempt questions without reference aids. This slowed progress during practice tests.

Recent Achievements

One Brooklyn tutor noted a Year 10 student who had previously relied on hints is now independently spotting and correcting their own algebra mistakes during sessions.

A recent high school chemistry lesson saw a student, who used to mix up empirical and molecular formulas, clearly explain the difference between them without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a Year 4 learner who would often guess answers now confidently asks for help when stuck—showing they're comfortable voicing what they don't understand.

Last session, that same student finished all ten questions without skipping any or giving up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarraville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Annunciation School.
