For me, every student may have a different receptive ability. Therefore, a tutor need to be patient for the first time to understand their students. And then, try to teach them for understanding the whole picture, the fundamentals rather than showing them the ways to solve a particular exercise without any combination with other knowledge. Passion…

A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to impact positively on the life of the student and bring about a change. Other than helping a student reach their academic potential, a tutor can help him or her develop other skills such as critical thinking, time management and effective study skills other than rote…

I think a good tutor needs to be patient with the student. There are times that the teaching process does not go as smoothly as planned but listening helps better understand the student as well as his point of view. I have my own teaching plan and note for every student. I find myself good at spotting main points that student should focus on and…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Tutors must have clear communication and explanation skills to ensure students fully understand the course. In addition, it is also very important to give appropriate encouragement to students. Tutors should check for understanding as they go and constantly build confidence so that the student feels like their abilities are improving. When a student feels confident, wonderful things begin to happen. Their curiosity is ignited, and they are more likely to ask questions in class and read additional texts about things that interest them.…

As each student is unique it is important to assess their level of learning, identify the areas where they are lacking and then provide suitable tutoring. To be able to connect with the kids/student, making an environment where they are excited and enjoy studying, while being able to speak up on their doubts. I connect with the kids quite well. In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

Inside Brunswick WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jade practised **addition techniques like rainbow facts and doubles**, and worked through school worksheets on identifying quarters.

For Year 9, Mia focused on **expanding and factorising algebraic expressions** as well as tackling worded algebra problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam reviewed **trigonometric functions—particularly angles of elevation and depression—using worded problem scenarios** to prepare for his upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students arrived without essential materials such as notebooks or homework, making it difficult to revise specific topics or track progress—one Year 10 student, for instance, "forgot her maths book, so we had to work off internet worksheets and our memories of what the test was going to cover."

In senior years, over-reliance on calculators appeared: a VCE student scored much lower on non-calculator sections ("marks were 22% (no calculator) and 45% (calculator/open book)"), highlighting a need for stronger mental arithmetic skills.

Across primary and middle years, perfectionism or fear of error often led to freezing up instead of attempting answers; as one tutor observed, "she will freeze up at a question until I prompt her to either tell me if she 'has no idea' or 'give me any answer, even if you think it's wrong.'" This hesitancy slowed practice and sometimes left gaps unaddressed in real time.

Recent Achievements

One Brunswick West tutor noticed that a Year 10 student who previously left tricky worded maths questions unfinished was able to complete one independently after just a few prompts, and then proactively asked for feedback on his creative writing, showing real openness to improvement.

A high schooler preparing for exams started bringing her own revision materials and, after working through trigonometry problems together, could solve similar ones entirely alone—something she hadn't managed before.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who relied heavily on finger counting now uses new addition strategies automatically and even graphed his improved worksheet times to show his mum.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
