In my opinion, guiding the student to being able to help himself or herself is the most crucial aspect in teaching. In other words, teaching the student to learn things on their own is what makes teaching so powerful. Firstly I am patient with students to a certain degree. This allows me to make the most out of the time I teach and contribute to…

I believe that the role of a tutor is to empathize with students and their challenges. As such, I think that it is important to provide a tailored learning experience for stuents and to supply them with the necessary support they need to excel past their obstacles. As a tutor, I believe that one of my greatest strengths is my diligence,…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student isn't to remove the obstacles that hold them back, but to convince them that they can remove them themselves. I am good at adapting how I explain things. One of my issues with many of my teachers was that they would only teach their material in one way, the issue of teaching a whole class…

The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to be understanding and friendly to them so that they don't hesitate to share their problems. focusing more on the topics they find difficult to understand and being there for them for as long as they need is the best thing a tutor can do. The two most important things would be to clear the basics of the subject and to keep the student interested in it. Most of the students develop phobia of maths or stop being interested in the subject because they do not understand the basics. This in turn, leads them to not focus on the subject even if they are capable of doing good in it or they…

Understand the student's way of thinking. Every student deserves attention from a tutor to channel their thoughts in the right direction. A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. A tutor should also be able to act like a mentor for educational and professional guide. However, it is very important for tutors to keep a professional boundary in mind. A good tutor should be able to clearly explain concepts and methods to their students, and should be able to answer any questions a student has and be prepared before the tutoring session for these questions. A good tutor should give the confidence and tools for a student to succeed independently. I think I have a strong knowledge of the VCE…

I think the most important things a tutor can do would be to be patient, and to cater for each specific student. If a tutor is unable to adapt to each student, the purpose of one-on-one tutoring is nullified. I think I am good at adapting my teaching approach depending on the specific student, and explaining things in multiple different ways…

A tutor must be able to secure a positive impression of the subject in the student's mind, regardless of how arduous the subject content might be. A tutor is a third parent and must have immense patience to ensure that the child grasps each and every detail, even if they ask us to repeat what we taught. Besides, as tutors, we must always advocate…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and create a safe space where students feel confident to ask, share, and explore. Once that trust is there, it becomes much easier to guide them, inspire curiosity, and help them believe in themselves. I want the students to be confident and build their self-esteem. My strengths as a tutor…

Students might not know the reason behind their difficulties in learning something, or they may not notice that they have misconceptions that block further learning, so they need tutors to help them out. Inside Brunswick WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jade practised **addition techniques like rainbow facts and doubles**, and worked through school worksheets on identifying quarters.

For Year 9, Mia focused on **expanding and factorising algebraic expressions** as well as tackling worded algebra problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam reviewed **trigonometric functions—particularly angles of elevation and depression—using worded problem scenarios** to prepare for his upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students arrived without essential materials such as notebooks or homework, making it difficult to revise specific topics or track progress—one Year 10 student, for instance, "forgot her maths book, so we had to work off internet worksheets and our memories of what the test was going to cover."

In senior years, over-reliance on calculators appeared: a VCE student scored much lower on non-calculator sections ("marks were 22% (no calculator) and 45% (calculator/open book)"), highlighting a need for stronger mental arithmetic skills.

Across primary and middle years, perfectionism or fear of error often led to freezing up instead of attempting answers; as one tutor observed, "she will freeze up at a question until I prompt her to either tell me if she 'has no idea' or 'give me any answer, even if you think it's wrong.'" This hesitancy slowed practice and sometimes left gaps unaddressed in real time.

Recent Achievements

One Brunswick West tutor noticed that a Year 10 student who previously left tricky worded maths questions unfinished was able to complete one independently after just a few prompts, and then proactively asked for feedback on his creative writing, showing real openness to improvement.

A high schooler preparing for exams started bringing her own revision materials and, after working through trigonometry problems together, could solve similar ones entirely alone—something she hadn't managed before.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who relied heavily on finger counting now uses new addition strategies automatically and even graphed his improved worksheet times to show his mum.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
