The most important thing is to learn what the student needs. It is easy to go off track and teach all the information you know, but I believe the students' request come first. Even though the students might not know what they need, the tutor should work with them and identify which areas the student need improvements on. Hence, the tutor could…

Setting high but achievable standards for students is essential as it pushes students to break self-imposed barriers. It enables them to discover themselves and gives them the much-needed confidence to excel in their academics or prospective career path. Encouraging then and making the students more confident and independent in the way they approach problems. I believe a tutor should give them the tools so that the pupils can make their path on developing the necessary skills. I can quickly connect with the students and look for their needs and how is the best way for them to approach the…

The most important thing is allowing students to become independent. The tutor should show them how to solve problems so that they can do them themselves and not just solve problems for them. My strength is illustrating concepts and finding the right examples that explain the point best. I also have good communication skills that make the student…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them to understand problems and have strong basic knowledge. Therefore, they can do their homework without a tutor or teacher to ask. I have a lot of patients to work through problems with others. I can say a word in the easiest way to help others to understand. If my friend has a…

I think the most important goal as a tutor is to create a positive environment for a student. Being patient, understanding and maintaining a positive attitude has a wide array of benefits, including learning. Second to this is the ability to help a student gain an instinctive understanding of the concept manner. More than just helping with…

As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and confident. A lot of students actually understand more than they think, but they might be anxious, unsure, or afraid of making mistakes. First of all, transpositional thinking is really important. For students, they're the first time to learn some concepts while tutors have been dealing with the same concepts for at least several years. So a tutor must think from a student's perspective to find a better way to teach students. Secondly, a tutor should be able to check students'…

Inside Brunswick WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jade practised **addition techniques like rainbow facts and doubles**, and worked through school worksheets on identifying quarters.

For Year 9, Mia focused on **expanding and factorising algebraic expressions** as well as tackling worded algebra problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam reviewed **trigonometric functions—particularly angles of elevation and depression—using worded problem scenarios** to prepare for his upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students arrived without essential materials such as notebooks or homework, making it difficult to revise specific topics or track progress—one Year 10 student, for instance, "forgot her maths book, so we had to work off internet worksheets and our memories of what the test was going to cover."

In senior years, over-reliance on calculators appeared: a VCE student scored much lower on non-calculator sections ("marks were 22% (no calculator) and 45% (calculator/open book)"), highlighting a need for stronger mental arithmetic skills.

Across primary and middle years, perfectionism or fear of error often led to freezing up instead of attempting answers; as one tutor observed, "she will freeze up at a question until I prompt her to either tell me if she 'has no idea' or 'give me any answer, even if you think it's wrong.'" This hesitancy slowed practice and sometimes left gaps unaddressed in real time.

Recent Achievements

One Brunswick West tutor noticed that a Year 10 student who previously left tricky worded maths questions unfinished was able to complete one independently after just a few prompts, and then proactively asked for feedback on his creative writing, showing real openness to improvement.

A high schooler preparing for exams started bringing her own revision materials and, after working through trigonometry problems together, could solve similar ones entirely alone—something she hadn't managed before.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who relied heavily on finger counting now uses new addition strategies automatically and even graphed his improved worksheet times to show his mum.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
