First thing which I can assure to all my students is that I'll make them understand the concepts clear so that they can remember and apply it forever in their life. Also I think a good teacher has to teach the subject from a student point of view, so that we can understand where they face problem in understanding the concept and help them to…

Being an inspirational character. A tutor has to encourage his/her students always. During a semester/course, there will be certain times when students will lose interests for a poor mark (may be), or a personal problem. A tutor can't force a student to complete a session because it has to! A friendly approach can be helpful sometimes as well.…

Understand their way of learning, and adjusting to the student to accomodate them. I have had multiple experiences where my tutor would try to teach their method and force that method upon me. I think one of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence within them. I believe a tutor should have a better understanding of student's perspectives. To elaborate, every student has a different perspective, and some will go in a very different direction tutor should understand the student's perspective before judging or correcting students. The tutor should ask questions and should bring up real-life examples so…

As a student myself, the important things a tutor can do for a student can provide a clear and simple explanation and help them how to break down a given problem and apply the learned concept in real-life scenarios. And, another important point to note is that every student is unique, so as a tutor, I should be able to adapt to the teaching style…

Padma and Pearl have made a good connection and are working well together. She arrives on time, is very focussed and very good at engaging Pearl. Padma also really knows her maths and I think this has helped pearl feel more confident about doing math.

Inside BundooraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jessie worked on long division with both single- and two-digit divisors, then practiced adding and subtracting simple fractions where denominators were factors of each other.

Year 8 student Sarah focused on algebraic equations involving all four operations, and began working with similar terms as well as finding lowest common multiples and highest common factors.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily completed trigonometry, applying the Pythagoras theorem to solve for unknown side lengths in right-angled triangles and using diagrams to support understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student's tendency to skip writing working for algebra led to repeated confusion and missed marks—"she often jumps straight to the answer, which hides small mistakes."

For a Year 11 economics student, answers lacked full explanations in economic terms; incomplete elaboration made it hard to show depth of understanding.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 struggled with using the correct formula during geometry questions, hesitating over which process to apply.

In each case, these habits left students spending extra time retracing steps or feeling unsure about their responses during assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Bundoora tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help; last week, he raised his hand mid-problem and explained exactly where he was stuck, leading him to finish all the algebra questions on his own.

In another session, a Year 11 student who'd previously mixed up biology concepts began completing short-answer questions independently after using her own summary notes for the first time.

Meanwhile, Jessie in Year 5 started writing out her multiplication workings step-by-step instead of guessing—she finished her homework with only one careless mistake.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We have been very happy with Matthew and importantly, Xavier has worked well with Matthew and has found the tutoring beneficial.

Claire found Samir to be a great tutor - very knowledgeable, encouraging and helpful :-)

Tuition sessions are going on really well as my son has had considerable improvements in Maths with better grades ( jumped from C to A) and much better conceptual understanding of several difficult topics. He finds Ben a gentle and consistent tutor who has kept a wonderful rapport with him. They have also covered some topics in English which helped quite a bit. I would certainly recommend Benjamin as a very helpful and effective tutor for teenagers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe Grammar School - University Campus.
