As a tutor the most important thing is encouragement. we understand how different one student is from each other, while it may often feel like 1 student out of many, for that student it is everything. So being encouraging, patient and understanding of them is very important for a student during times of struggle. assure them that mistakes are part…

A tutor can sometimes follow the lead of a student, because a student can help the tutor to understand the best way they understand things. A tutor can show students of what they are truly capable of, not letting the confidence of student to fall due to overwhelming pressure of schooling system. To make sure tutor and student are on the same…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to genuinely care for the student. Because i feel when you care for the student it becomes very easy to build a rapport and teaching becomes more simple. I am a very adaptable person in general and i apply this in my tutoring as well. Every student is different and i think it is…

I think a tutor is a map for the pathway of the student's success. The tutor will do all within their limit to make sure they have given enough importance to the student to excel. This includes the peripheral knowledge that a student should have surrounding the content/topic - which means what is the purpose of learning/ how is it going to help…

As a student who has had tutors in the past, I think that the most important thing that a tutor can do for their student is to be there for them when they need help and assistance. Time is obviously very valuable, but I realised that I appreciated those tutors who went above and beyond to ensure that I received the help that I needed. Further,…

Giving a student enough time to get understand something. This could mean waiting for a student to attempt a question and ask for help, instead of helping them right away. Waiting gives the student a sense of independence and a confidence boost when they have done a question correctly themselves. I make sure to adapt to the way a child learns…

It is important for a tutor to be a good listener and finding the best route to achieve the best result. Based on individuals, we need to understand their real struggle and making plan accordingly. I believe the 3 most important things a tutor can do for a student is: 1. being fluent with the content, 2. giving moral support when necessary and 3. create a sort of friendship with the student. I think my biggest strength as a tutor is to be able to teach via understanding content rather then rope learning, which i think is an imperative…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is have the wisdom to be able to solve the problems which they cannot. Because if a tutor can't even do this, then everything else is pretty much irrelevant. Furthermore, having the ability to explain concepts is also very important as you can't be a great tutor if you can't explain things well…

I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. Inside BurnleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sam worked through factorisation in algebra and solved chemistry mole calculation problems, using step-by-step examples to clarify each process.

For Year 10, Matt focused on structuring English essays by embedding quotes effectively and linking evidence to themes in "The Golden Age."

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Yasmine practiced plotting linear equations on a graph—finding coordinates and understanding why these equations form straight lines—by working through visual exercises together.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student in Mathematics often avoided writing out equations and working, relying on mental calculations—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors. This made it hard to spot where his reasoning broke down.

In Year 11 English, a student repeatedly left homework incomplete and didn't use highlighters or mindmaps for essay planning, missing opportunities to structure arguments more clearly.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 struggled with consistently bringing required books to lessons, disrupting focus at the start of each session.

During a Physics assignment in Year 12, brief answers were submitted without detail, limiting depth and understanding.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burnley noticed Matt now completes all his English homework ahead of time and uses planning tables and flash cards to organise ideas—previously he'd only write brief notes and needed prompting.

In Year 10 Biology, another student who once hesitated with project tasks started volunteering creative ways to build a plant cell diorama after some encouragement.

Meanwhile, Yasin (Year 12) is showing real independence: instead of waiting for solutions, he's begun applying physics formulas by himself during lessons and checking his own answers before asking for help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Gary is doing a great job and Emilee is really appreciative of their time together.

Carl has enjoyed working with both his tutors this year and is well prepared for his VCE math methods exams. Having a personal tutor, even for a student like Carl who is already achieving excellent academic results, has helped relieve some of the stress of VCE and enabled him to sort out areas he wanted to work on with more depth.

Bailey is really happy with Jackie, and so are we, he enjoys their sessions and I can see he is understanding much better.  Jackie is very courteous and punctual.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - FFV Burnley.
