(1) Value of patience: Being a tutor/teacher means I have to face a range of students whose level of understanding completely vary. My students will emotionally accept me only if I am patient enough. (2) Value of resilience: Teaching is very flexible as I should be active to explore the strengths and weaknesses of my students, finally develop…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

A tutor can engage more in helping the student understand specific concepts and make the environment of teaching interesting. The teaching environment can be made interesting by giving the students a reason to learn the concepts and showing real-world…

I find the part where students are able to regain their confidence and find motivation in the subject as most rewarding for the tutor. It is absolutely thrilling to witness to process of my students overcoming the fear of the subject and to slowly learn to accept and enjoy the subject, thus learning even more effectively, in the end. My experience…

Support, guide, motivate and teach the student until he don't understand. A tutor should get sense of satisfaction after his student gets satisfied. I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

Inside BurnsideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Armando worked on comparing fractions and decimals using number lines, as well as converting between units.

For Year 10, Ella focused on surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes like spheres and prisms, applying formulas to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jay revised bivariate statistics by interpreting residual plots and working through exponential regression questions from a revision guide.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student's working was described as "hard to follow," with cramped handwriting and inconsistent labelling—making it easy to lose track during matrix problems.

A Year 11 student left several assignment requirements unclear until the last minute; as a tutor noted, "he needs to check the task sheet closely before submitting."

Meanwhile, in Year 7 algebra, skipping written steps when simplifying expressions led to repeated errors with negatives.

For a primary learner, focus drifted quickly during longer tasks—work became untidy and mistakes crept in as attention waned near the end of each session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burnside noticed that a Year 10 student who used to hesitate when stuck on algebraic problems now confidently asks for help as soon as something isn't clear, rather than guessing or staying silent.

In another session, a Year 12 student independently scored B+ on his first two practice exams and pinpointed areas he wants to improve, showing real ownership over his learning.

Meanwhile, a younger student who'd previously relied heavily on reminders is now tackling worksheets mostly solo and only seeks clarification when truly needed. Last week, she remembered how to convert decimals to percentages and got every question right on her class test.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burnside Primary School.
