It is worthwhile to bring students to the realization that, nothing is impossible when they apply their minds to anything. Nurturing young minds and sowing seeds that will engender innovation is the ultimate role of a tutor. In this…

My main focus is to not just explain the content in a way they really understand the principles behind it and it would not just be memorising the content on the student's part. I also believe that connecting with the student can help the teaching learning process a lot. I am a very understanding person in general. So I am most of the time capable…

The aim of accepting a tutorial for a student is to achieve higher academic result. Yet for a tutor, it is not to merely give answers straight the way. In my point of view, tutoring is receiving inquiries and giving tutors' knowledge. A tutor should acquire abilities to help students first understanding the basic ideas buried in deep, and grow…

Among the most crucial things a tutor should be doing is helping their students build confidence by creating a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and looking past their self-doubt. I also believe that a great tutor should be able to adapt their approach to match the student they are tutoring, as every person learns…

I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

A student is a kind of Variable. All are different kinds/versions. Some are good with numbers, some are good with core theories, and some are good with implementation. I would love to first know the student well. Then I would like to feed the knowledge step by step. I make sure that he/she enjoys the subject instead of dislikes the course. I am…

I think tutors need to make/ help students feel comfortable and less stressful with their studies in school. Talking to the students and identify their strengths and weaknesses, and hence support them to improve and reach their fullest potential. I always try to adapt my teaching to the students. I believe the most important thing here would be to ensure the student understands what is being taught and is able to move forward in their learning. Tutors as facilitators must be able to give them the confidence that they are improving and can do even better with persistent practice and revision. I think one of my greatest strengths is being…

(1) Value of patience: Being a tutor/teacher means I have to face a range of students whose level of understanding completely vary. My students will emotionally accept me only if I am patient enough. (2) Value of resilience: Teaching is very flexible as I should be active to explore the strengths and weaknesses of my students, finally develop…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. what a tutor can do is more than teaching. Tutors should be friends and a good-listener for evey student. Every student is different. They may have different learning difficulty and hardness to go through. listen their trouble on studying and give suggestions based on different cases instead of forcing the knowledge into their brain from the…

Inside BurnsideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Armando worked on comparing fractions and decimals using number lines, as well as converting between units.

For Year 10, Ella focused on surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes like spheres and prisms, applying formulas to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jay revised bivariate statistics by interpreting residual plots and working through exponential regression questions from a revision guide.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student's working was described as "hard to follow," with cramped handwriting and inconsistent labelling—making it easy to lose track during matrix problems.

A Year 11 student left several assignment requirements unclear until the last minute; as a tutor noted, "he needs to check the task sheet closely before submitting."

Meanwhile, in Year 7 algebra, skipping written steps when simplifying expressions led to repeated errors with negatives.

For a primary learner, focus drifted quickly during longer tasks—work became untidy and mistakes crept in as attention waned near the end of each session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burnside noticed that a Year 10 student who used to hesitate when stuck on algebraic problems now confidently asks for help as soon as something isn't clear, rather than guessing or staying silent.

In another session, a Year 12 student independently scored B+ on his first two practice exams and pinpointed areas he wants to improve, showing real ownership over his learning.

Meanwhile, a younger student who'd previously relied heavily on reminders is now tackling worksheets mostly solo and only seeks clarification when truly needed. Last week, she remembered how to convert decimals to percentages and got every question right on her class test.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burnside Primary School.
