I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing a tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. Adaptability is also a key component for a tutor as not every…

Whilst a tutor is only present with their student for a limited time, they can help by providing a clear understanding of what the syllabus wants and giving resources. They are also there to answer and clarify a student’s questions and assist in developing a structured work routine. Since I have recently completed the HSC and have studied the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student understand a topic. This may sound intuitive however it is often majorly overlooked and replaced with acceptance or shear memorisation for the student. What I want is for my students is a true understanding of the subject, giving them the tools of learning so that they can…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to help a student understand the syllabus of the subject and feel confident in answering any questions that can be in upcoming exams. I have finished my HSC only last year which allows me to understand the pressure students feel towards upcoming exams. This allows me to teach in a certain way that makes…

Firstly, Building confidence in a student to make him function in his own.Secondly, a tutor should consider himself in terms of the student's point of view. My biggest strength is steering the student in the positive direction and always boosting their confidence level. I believe, once the student feels he could perform, we succeed as a…

I believe a good tutor should show patience, giving students the time, space, and reassurance they need to work through challenges without feeling rushed or discouraged. I consider my greatest strength as a tutor to be my ability to adapt to each student’s needs. I can quickly identify when a teaching method isn't effective and modify my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be loving. Actually caring for the student's academic success will not only make them more likely to succeed, but it will help them go beyond to reaching a scholarly level. Genuinely understanding the students need and tailoring the best approach of teaching accordingly is the best thing a tutor can do. No students are same and have same level of intelligence and this should be considered by the teacher. As a tutor, my biggest strength is that i genuinely love teaching not just solving problems, but explaining deeply…

As a tutor it is my responsibility to make sure the student understands and grasps the concept of the lesson. I am student myself so I know the struggles and the laziness that comes with having to study. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. Creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for a student is one important aspect of effective tutoring. The private setting is what sets apart tutoring and classroom learning. So much of learning is based on relationships, communication styles, understanding a student's background and their academic, social, and emotional growths which…

One of the most important things when tutoring is to maxmise your effort to help a student in any way possible, without actually doing an assignment/answering the question for them. The most important thing is to make sure that the student has completely understood the concept. It is useless to move forward if they don't understand the basics. The most important role a tutor plays for a student is to assist the student in developing their own agency in their subject area. When we believe a subject is beyond us, or we're not smart enough to grasp it, we shy away and don't push ourselves as hard. Often this belief has developed from what others have told us or from not having the right…

Different students have different skills. I believe recognising this is what helps a tutor make a difference to a student. The most important thing is that a tutor recognises a student as an individual; addressing areas where a student has little confidence while offering lifelong learning strategies. At a practical level, this includes…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. Inside BurwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily practised multiplication and fractions, working through long division strategies to boost confidence.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on solving quadratic equations by factorisation and simplifying expressions, as well as exploring graph transformations using visual aids.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia revised simultaneous equations and functions—solving systems both algebraically and graphically—to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on quadratic equations often omitted key steps in their written solutions—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors—making it harder to identify mistakes.

In a Year 8 class, one student avoided homework and relied heavily on guessing answers instead of attempting the calculations, especially during worded problems.

For a Year 4 lesson, another child struggled to focus and frequently left tasks incomplete when practicing multiplication tables.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for exams did not attempt assigned practice papers outside lessons, resulting in less familiarity with time-pressured questions.

Recent Achievements

One Burwood tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to rely on step-by-step guidance now arriving at sessions with her own attempted exam questions, only needing small hints to push through tricky parts—she's even begun correcting her own mistakes before asking for help.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who struggled to keep up with homework is now consistently completing tasks on time and presenting neater working out in maths, showing real ownership of her learning.

In a younger class, one child who often hesitated to start tasks has started counting by twos independently and no longer says "I don't know" right away when faced with new problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burwood Library and Community Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burwood Public School.
