This helps to connect with the student in a easy way and keep their interest in education. Being post-graduate research student I can feel myself within the shoes of the students and would like to clear…

Instill a deeper understanding and appreciation of the subject. Those are the foundations upon which the rest is built. Strengths: I love kids and I love maths. I believe I'm quite adaptable and am happy to modify how I teach depending on the learning style of the student. Weaknesses: As of yet I still don't have much experience, particularly in…

A tutor should teach their student how to think. They shouldn't be teaching them to rote memorise (although there is a place for that in high school academics) but rather a general method of solving problems. When a tutor's work is done, their student should be able to look at a difficult problem, identify what kind of a problem it is and apply…

Aside from assisting them with their learning and studies, I believe it is extremely important that we help the student to feel more confident in themselves and to feel well-supported. The most important thing that a tutor can do to the students is to make them comfortable with the topics they are studying such that they find the curriculum fun to learn rather than a burden to bear. From the feedbacks I have received, students like the examples that I give while teaching. They have said that they have found it closely related to…

A tutor can be the support for a student who’s struggling with their studies. I think patience, figuring out how the student learns, and how they’re currently viewing a problem are the most important tools. A combination of both showing them how to solve a problem while also challenging them to develop their critical thinking skills. I’m very patient and have experience with several different topics. I went through AP…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and show empathy. Every student learns at a different pace, and if we understand that then it will be a lot easier for the student to learn. Being understanding of the emotions that go on through learning new material is very important, it helps us connect with our student…

Inside BurwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily practised multiplication and fractions, working through long division strategies to boost confidence.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on solving quadratic equations by factorisation and simplifying expressions, as well as exploring graph transformations using visual aids.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia revised simultaneous equations and functions—solving systems both algebraically and graphically—to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on quadratic equations often omitted key steps in their written solutions—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors—making it harder to identify mistakes.

In a Year 8 class, one student avoided homework and relied heavily on guessing answers instead of attempting the calculations, especially during worded problems.

For a Year 4 lesson, another child struggled to focus and frequently left tasks incomplete when practicing multiplication tables.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for exams did not attempt assigned practice papers outside lessons, resulting in less familiarity with time-pressured questions.

Recent Achievements

One Burwood tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to rely on step-by-step guidance now arriving at sessions with her own attempted exam questions, only needing small hints to push through tricky parts—she's even begun correcting her own mistakes before asking for help.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who struggled to keep up with homework is now consistently completing tasks on time and presenting neater working out in maths, showing real ownership of her learning.

In a younger class, one child who often hesitated to start tasks has started counting by twos independently and no longer says "I don't know" right away when faced with new problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burwood Library and Community Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Burwood Public School.
