For me personally a tutor is like a role model. They can be a big source of inspiration. Guiding a student to easily complete their studying and making it enjoyable. I am very understanding and like to tutor each student with much patience. I like to make the students feel that I am a student too and we are learning together. Doing this makes me…

I think it is very important as a tutor to start a topic from its basic and build a strong idea of the subject material so that the student enjoys studying. That is going to boost up the student's confidence on the subject. I can not stress enough about the importance of building confidence in a student. I am very patient with my students and I am…

The most important I as a tutor can do is to accept that each student has a different way of learning and I should adapt and blend their teaching methods according to the student, there's no one size fits all method for everyone. I completed my schooling and bachelor's in engineering (Computer Science) from India and the education system in India…

I think adapting to students learning style is vital to allow for the most growth in their education. Tutors are exceptionally valuable as the one on one or small class dynamics allow for the specific needs of a student to be catered for, giving their learning attention in a way that can be difficult to access within the schooling system alone.…

Teaching effectively so that the student can understand the content. It is important to make the students do their own work, rather than doing it for them as they do not learn effectively if the tutor does the work for them. The tutor must also commit to every class and treat every student equally with respect. - My strength are maths and…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to form a really strong connection with them so that the student is not afraid to ask questions and gives them someone to trust/rely on. Tutoring is mainly about facilitating the students understanding of concepts, but the tutor should also aim to foster a drive in the student to understand why they are struggling with the respective topic and a will to seek a solution on their own. The tutor should eventually seek to equip students with self-awareness and a drive for…

I believe making a student become confident in their own ability is very important. I think the most important thing to understand as a tutor is that different students think differently. Certain students will naturally have more or less affinity to different subjects, but also different ways of learning. Trying to figure out which way to best teach requires understanding which way students are best able to learn. For instance,…

Inside Burwood HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ruby worked on strengthening addition and subtraction skills and was introduced to telling time using clocks.

For Year 9, Marcus tackled expanding algebraic equations and applied these in a maths assignment for practical understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Chloe focused on mastering quadratic equations through factorising and expanding exercises, making use of step-by-step practice problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on quadratic equations often skipped showing steps in algebra, which, as a tutor noted, "hid sign errors and made mistakes harder to find." This led to confusion when checking answers and slowed progress in later questions.

In Year 8, during work on probability exercises, a student struggled to identify whether the question required "A and B" or "A or B," often not reading test prompts closely enough—this left parts of answers incomplete.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner repeatedly guessed rather than trying her own working; when distracted or unsure, she would ask for help immediately instead of attempting solutions herself.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burwood Heights noticed one Year 11 student has stopped trying to memorise formulas and instead breaks them down visually, which helped her finally solve problems on bearings by drawing coloured diagrams—a big shift from her earlier confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student recently managed to catch all the errors she made on her algebra homework and explained why they happened, showing more independence than before.

In primary sessions, a Year 3 girl who used to say "I don't know" now starts counting by twos out loud without prompting or hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burwood Library and Community Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
