Giving a student enough time to get understand something. This could mean waiting for a student to attempt a question and ask for help, instead of helping them right away. Waiting gives the student a sense of independence and a confidence boost when they have done a question correctly themselves. I make sure to adapt to the way a child learns…

Listen to the student. I think it's important that tutors listen to their students to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and get to know them. By doing this, you'll be able to help them in the way that works best for them, in the areas that they're struggling with the most. Sometimes there are things outside of schoolwork that make it hard…

Make them feel comfortable enough so that they feel free to raise doubts even though they might be silly. I firstly like to understand the strengths and weakness of the person I am tutoring so that I can give that person a tailored…

Naturally a tutor should be knowledgeable in the subjects that they teach but I beleive that it is equally important for a tutor to have a genuine interest in helping their students succeed. Give them a safe space to ask questions and learn in a way they enjoy and are progressing in. There is no point in being over qualified and intelligent, but unapproachable and closed off. To truly understand a topic, you have to be able to explain it in a way that anyone could understand. I believe the most important thing you can do as a tutor is…

A successful tutor needs to be open to different needs of individual learners and be able to provide flexible methods of catering for various needs. This will require them to be professional and knowledgeable about what they do and provide high levels of acceptance and adaptability. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is have the wisdom to be able to solve the problems which they cannot. Because if a tutor can't even do this, then everything else is pretty much irrelevant. Furthermore, having the ability to explain concepts is also very important as you can't be a great tutor if you can't explain things well…

I believe the 3 most important things a tutor can do for a student is: 1. being fluent with the content, 2. giving moral support when necessary and 3. create a sort of friendship with the student. It is important for a tutor to be a good listener and finding the best route to achieve the best result. Based on individuals, we need to understand their real struggle and making plan accordingly. Also being empathic to their problems, and encouraging. I'm patient and an active problem solver. I would seek different ways to help our student…

All students would benefit from having someone go through topics with them one on one to help them understand things better. This question need to be discussed into two solutions. First, for the lower grade student, it is essential for them to build up their interest towards maths, which will help them to be better off in the future. On the other hand, for the student who are preparing for their VCE, the tutor should focus more how to improve their grade in order to get…

Local Reviews

We had a very good experience with Ezy Math. They were very proactive and great to deal with. When the first tutor we hired didn't work for us, we requested a change and they were quick to find us a replacement who was excellent. Jenny Wong is a great math Tutor and was kind, compassionate, patient and excellent at tutoring Maths. My daughter really benefited greatly and built much confidence and did well under her tutoring. Ezy Math regularly ask for feedback to see how things are going and are happy to work with you to make sure you have right tutor for your child.

Inside CamberwellTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Adele worked on operations with decimals, including multiplying and dividing them, and practised applying place value concepts to support accuracy.

Year 7 student Mia reviewed algebraic expressions—simplifying, factorising, and expanding brackets—and explored multiplying exponents with the same base using step-by-step written explanations.

Meanwhile, Jaidan in Year 8 focused on mastering Pythagoras' theorem by breaking down the formula's application to right-angled triangles and also spent time reviewing his recent test to address specific misunderstandings in geometry.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3 maths, one student often guessed answers for worded division problems or larger multiplication facts instead of working them out, saying "it's too hard" before attempting. This led to repeated confusion with remainders and symbol meanings.

In Year 7, another student rushed mental arithmetic rather than writing clear steps—"he prefers rushing through his working rather than writing it out step by step," a tutor noted—which made it difficult to track down errors in negative number calculations.

By Year 10 algebra, skipping written working meant sign errors went unnoticed until results were checked at the end, leading to frustration when mistakes accumulated.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Camberwell noticed Jayden's answers have become more structured and thorough—he now explains each step in algebraic problems, rather than just giving the final answer.

Jaidan, a high school student who previously struggled with Pythagoras' theorem, was able to spot where he'd gone wrong on his last test and corrected his approach when reviewing practice questions.

Meanwhile, Mia has started asking for clarification instead of skipping tricky worded maths problems; this shift means she now completes most multi-step questions independently, including finding 10% off prices and calculating change with decimals.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Camberwell Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Camberwell Girls Grammar School.
