The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient when a student is struggling. It is essential to set goals for each student individually so they can achieve these goals and feel excited to learn and improve their knowledge. I am a very calm person and will be very patient when tutoring children. I am also very logical, which helps me to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is grow their confidence in the subject matter so that they know, with work, they will understand what their teacher is telling them and succeed rather than constantly feeling defeated. I have found that reliability is something students and parents alike, really appreciate in a tutor. It is important for a tutor to be someone that both student and parent can depend on, as we are there to provide an important service to both. In regards to the student, we are there to help them learn, and regarding parents, a tutors presence is…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to help the child grow and learn through assistance, rather than just providing the answers, as they need to understand what they are learning, and need to be able to develop the skills learned and apply them to their studies. Being present and active. I think being on your phone or doing something else while teaching the student makes it a negative experience for them as they may feel invalidated or that their needs aren't a priority. I think that a tutor should help foster understanding of difficult concepts so that the student is able to do the work themselves, rather than doing the work for them. Additionally, going over the work with them, and showing them how they can improve is important. Ensuring that they understand ways they can get better helps more than telling them,…

I believe that every individual learns things in different ways. In a classroom, each teacher will have their own way of presenting and teaching the content, and this method is most likely to be consistent throughout the year. Whilst this may cater for some students, and help them excel in the particular subject, it might not be suitable for other…

I believe it is important to show empathy, being able to relate to where the students are at is extremely important in building that relationship with them. Creating that relationship will allow students to share how they are feeling in terms of their confidence or concerns with certain subjects. Being honest is another thing a tutor can do for a…

I believe patience, resilience, and the ability to think fast to generate alternate ways to regain the student's focus, particularly if they are on the younger side. Aside from paying attention to the student's attention span, more importantly, a tutor should be prepared on going about different routes to ensure understanding of course content and…

Paola is fantastic. Even after a few lessons my little boy has started to grasp maths issues that were once challenging for him. I can't wait to see his progress after a few months. Paola has engaged with Lucas and has become a trusted advisor. Thanks again Paola!

Inside CarindaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Helena explored compound interest calculations and the use of recurrence relations in finance maths, practising with real-life formula applications.

For Year 10, revision with Chloe focused on balancing complex chemical equations and solving stoichiometry problems involving limiting and excess reagents.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Daniel worked on multiplying fractions and dividing fractions, using diagrams to clarify each step.

Recent Challenges

Relied heavily on solving limiting reagent questions in a single step without writing out working, which led to frequent sign errors—"rushes every question, needs to write his working out instead of solving questions in one go."

A Year 10 English student's assignment draft showed missing punctuation and lacked coherence, making feedback harder to act on.

In Year 6 Maths, mental multiplication was attempted quickly but with inconsistent handwriting and forgotten steps during multi-digit calculations.

For a senior Science report, the absence of formal justification for chosen methods left some conclusions unsupported by evidence.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carindale noticed a Year 11 student who started out confused about simple interest but, after working through real-life savings examples, could independently solve several questions by the end of the session.

In another high school lesson, a Year 10 student who previously struggled with index laws was able to explain and apply them correctly while tackling linear equations.

Meanwhile, one younger student made a subtle but important shift—she began telling her tutor exactly which maths concepts she wanted help with, instead of waiting to be prompted, and finished all her set problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carindale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carina State School.
