In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is to build a positive relationship with a student which is the key to become an effective teacher. This is important because it is impossible to engage a student into learning without building a positive rapport with them. The other important thing is to always encourage them to keep trying and…

It is important to raise the student's interest in study as interest is the premise for the student to invest time and effort. What is also important is that the tutor teach the student approaches and techniques to study, not only what's in the textbook. I also consider it prudent for tutors to have patience with students and to be…

The most important thing is identifying strengths, weaknesses and comfort zone of the student. The teacher in the comfort zone of student should help student work on his weaknesses and help the student identify his own strengths/passion and help him pursue it. This can also be summarized in a saying by a famous poet khalil Gibran on…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to improve their confidence in problem deconstruction. This skill is universally applicable and can can be use even after the leaving the tutoring session in different part of study or life, I vastly improved from year 10 to year 12 and into university in all my subjects. Going from…

A tutor can show students how challenging questions are done and prepare them well for their exams/tests. Plus, encourage them to put in their full potential to score well in exams. I am free to explain any concept, numerous times until the student has really understood. My job is to make sure they know what they are actually doing. I try to give…

I would say the most important things for me as a tutor is to support the students and provide them with past experience in terms of exam strategies and study skills and help them gain confidence in the subject. I believe it is vital for a tutor to provide classes focused on learning by interpreting the contents from different perspectives and solving different types of problems, rather than just transferring knowledge. Repetitive teaching will help students remember the contents longer, and eventually, they will be able to naturally apply what they have…

A tutor can guide a student to succeed. Not only in studies, but life in general. If tutors can make students aware of certain things which changes how they operate and that is the greatest thing a tutor can do. I am very patient and understanding. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspiring them into studying. Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each session is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, I’ll feel I’m making a real difference…

Being active when students are in need the most, answering questions as students ask them. Inside CarlingfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alice focused on solving ratio word problems and worked through homework covering basic algebraic equations.

For Year 9, Daniel practised using angle rules for parallel lines and calculated the area of polygons as part of his current schoolwork.

In Year 11, Michael completed revision on probability and interest topics, including working through several trial paper questions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to recall key decimal and unit conversion rules, which slowed progress in multi-step maths questions—"he needed a breakdown and stronger understanding of certain concepts."

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for financial maths became stuck when analysing payment tables, hesitating over which formula to use and losing valuable test time.

In English, one high schooler's motivation dipped after setbacks with creative writing, making it harder to experiment with new techniques.

At primary level, a child repeatedly forgot homework due to focusing on practice tests; this left gaps in revision and caused confusion when similar topics reappeared.

Recent Achievements

One Carlingford tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to make frequent "silly mistakes" in maths now actively checks his working for errors and spends more time reading questions before answering.

In Year 11, a student who previously hesitated with annuities is confidently using future value tables on her own and tackling harder examples without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who struggled with rounding numbers has started explaining the rounding process out loud before solving, showing new independence during problem-solving. Last session, she rounded up to the nearest ten and completed all calculations correctly without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlingford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like James Ruse Agricultural High School.
