Be there to challenge them but more importantly encourage them. Some of the most admirable teachers that I've had in school were the ones that understood me individually as a student, and did not just base their attitude towards me based on the mark I received. Empathy, patience, assertive, challenging, rewarding, and attentive. I believe that…

In my opinion, building a student’s confidence and providing friendly assistance is the best any tutor can do for their students. As someone who has received tutoring in the past, I know how much of a difference these simple things can make to a nervous or hesitant student. I believe my strongest attributes as a tutor are that I am very patient,…

I learnt the hard way through my years in school, that most of the time it is not the subject that makes the student enthusiastic but more the way that the subject itself is taught and transmitted. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand the student and be able to adapt to his/her learning process. With good positive vibes…

1. Encouragement 2. Academic help and support 3. Empathy and an understanding of the student I believe I have the patience and aptitude to really excel as a tutor. I will not get frustrated and agitated when a student is not understanding a specific topic. Instead, I will try and explain it in many ways until he or she is absolutely confident…

I think the best thing a tutor can do is provide a safe and supportive environment for students. It is important that students do not feel judged and are encouraged to ask questions and highlight the areas that they need to improve. The only way anyone can learn is by making those mistakes and trying it one way and trying again and again. Tutor's…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be able to build a good rapport with their student, as this is beneficial in not only creating an enjoyable and ideal learning environment, but also to build a connection that can facilitate a deeper understanding about the student, how they learn, and how they study. I am extremely patient, having…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the student feel at ease with the subject at hand, especially to the point where they begin their own individual methods of inquiry into the subject. A student should never feel under pressure to perform in ways that make them feel discouraged about their own abilities. The consequence of that is…

Tutoring in my opinion is not only putting pen to paper. I believe as a tutor it is vital to offer the students a level of support that encourages them to want to progress in their education, it is important to understand the individual you are tutoring as not only will it make them feel seen it will also massively improve their learning…

I think there are many factors that come into place when tutoring kids. Collaboration and positivity would definitely be my top 2 things to consider when tutoring as I feel as though it is important for the student to feel like they are getting somewhere whilst being supported and encouraged at the same time. Collaborating together is also crucial…

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ethan worked through simultaneous equations and revisited key trigonometry skills using practice questions.

In Year 10, Olivia focused on mastering financial maths topics like tax and superannuation, as well as learning how to calculate interest and wages from real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zara tackled probability concepts such as mutually exclusive events and two-step experiments, completing chapter reviews from her school textbook for extra reinforcement.

Recent Challenges

Messy or unclear working was a recurring issue in Years 7–10 mathematics, especially with algebra and geometry.

For instance, as noted in Year 8, "needs to improve on writing neater working out," which led to errors when factorising quadratics and drawing diagrams for trigonometry—numbers were hard to read and mistakes crept in unnoticed.

In Year 11, a student "struggled with drawing neat tree diagrams," making it difficult to track probability outcomes.

Forgetting to write reasons during angle proofs in Year 9 meant incomplete solutions even when the logic was correct; marks were lost simply because steps weren't explained.

Recent Achievements

A Carlton tutor noticed a big turnaround for a Year 10 student who struggled last year with simplifying surds—now she tackles them confidently and can explain her steps out loud.

In Year 11, another student impressed by quickly picking up circle geometry, applying new theorems without notes, and showing much more independence during problem-solving than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student made real progress in writing—her handwriting is noticeably larger and neater after weeks of encouragement, making it easier for her to set out her maths working clearly in class assignments.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Jack and Justin are getting along well. Jack seems to have to continued to improve since Justin started tutoring.

David did come over yesterday for a lesson with Kyle. Like you mentioned, he is a diligent and competent tutor with experience in teaching. He did put in a lot of effort even before he arrived to make sure he knew what he was dealing with. I am very happy and impressed with his teaching. Just wish we had found him earlier!

Carolina likes Deeba, whom she says is a gifted teacher, & continues to learn at what is to me an amazing rate.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton South Public School.
