I think adapting to students learning style is vital to allow for the most growth in their education. Tutors are exceptionally valuable as the one on one or small class dynamics allow for the specific needs of a student to be catered for, giving their learning attention in a way that can be difficult to access within the schooling system alone.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with sufficient learning resources as the student needs. Such as exam papers from different schools and providing a thorough explanation about the concept they do not understand. I am bilingual, my fluency in both English and Mandarin can help both local students and English…

Learning skills allow for the child to develop their own interests and pursue them further beyond the idea of exams and tests. I hope that my valuable skills allow for students to become high achievers, both in the academic situation and…

Something I believe is important is fostering a passion within the student for the subject, being the reason why someone starts to like something, become passionate, and work hard from their heart rather than from external sources. Personally, I believe that tutors play the most crucial role in facilitating a nurturing and interactive learning space, catering their teachings to the student's individual requirements, and offering personalized help, guidance and feedback too. This can be done in a tutor session to allow for students to feel at ease, speak freely, and ask…

I think some of the key things a tutor can do for a student include the tutor trying the absolute best to ensure the student understands the subject or any difficulties the student is having with the subject. A tutor must never give up but continuously strive to ensure that there student is confident in their ability to succeed in a subject. I…

In my opinion, the key thing to teach a student is independence. The more I can help a student become independent in their study, the better stead they'll be in for exams, revision and further education, as a passion for learning the material by your own merit is the key for future success. If I can pass on the passion I have for maths, teach my…

Assessing the student's strengths and weaknesses is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. It is of utter importance that the tutor provisions the required environment for the student to be comfortable. Also, the tutor should consider the circumstances of the student and act accordingly. Furthermore, the tutor must motivate the student to move forward in the subject by increasing the student's confidence in him/herself. The latter can…

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ethan worked through simultaneous equations and revisited key trigonometry skills using practice questions.

In Year 10, Olivia focused on mastering financial maths topics like tax and superannuation, as well as learning how to calculate interest and wages from real-world scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zara tackled probability concepts such as mutually exclusive events and two-step experiments, completing chapter reviews from her school textbook for extra reinforcement.

Recent Challenges

Messy or unclear working was a recurring issue in Years 7–10 mathematics, especially with algebra and geometry.

For instance, as noted in Year 8, "needs to improve on writing neater working out," which led to errors when factorising quadratics and drawing diagrams for trigonometry—numbers were hard to read and mistakes crept in unnoticed.

In Year 11, a student "struggled with drawing neat tree diagrams," making it difficult to track probability outcomes.

Forgetting to write reasons during angle proofs in Year 9 meant incomplete solutions even when the logic was correct; marks were lost simply because steps weren't explained.

Recent Achievements

A Carlton tutor noticed a big turnaround for a Year 10 student who struggled last year with simplifying surds—now she tackles them confidently and can explain her steps out loud.

In Year 11, another student impressed by quickly picking up circle geometry, applying new theorems without notes, and showing much more independence during problem-solving than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student made real progress in writing—her handwriting is noticeably larger and neater after weeks of encouragement, making it easier for her to set out her maths working clearly in class assignments.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton South Public School.
