A tutor is the most influencial person in a student's life and can create a strong positive impact on them. They not only teach the proposed subjects but impart lessons for life. They help build the confidence and personality of the individual and help create the next generation to lead tomorrow's world. By nature I am a very patient individual.…

As a tutor, I feel the ultimate goal is to benefit the student to become an independent and confident learner. Mostly, students see their tutors as role models, so it’s very important to keep ourselves updated and supportive throughout and be ready to reach out to them academically and as a friend whenever in need. To conclude, having confidence…

In my point of view, the most important things are: 1. Being able to distinguish the abilities of his student, 2. Finding the best language, method, speed, and as a whole an effective strategy to convey the materials to the student. 3. Being able to make a good connection so that the student feels calm and relaxed and at the same time…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student revolve around fostering a supportive and empowering learning environment. Firstly, it's crucial to provide personalized support tailored to each student's individual needs, learning style, and pace. The most important things a tutor can do would be to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment for the student. This could be done in ways such as adapting their teaching approach to meet the individual needs of each student and providing constructive feedback to help boost their confidence. A tutor must teach the underlying concepts and "why things work" rather than just "how things work". A good tutor is much more than just a problem solver. Good tutor builds capability in students to actually use what they learnt to solve and analyze complex real world problems. Strong background and grasp of the subject in question. Currently a…

I remember struggling with maths in my childhood, I used to hate it. This one tutor explained a concept that has stuck with me even till now. He said I should try to break down everything complex into the simplest form and stick to the basics. He also said he was confident in me. I feel I have never been the same after that. I found Maths…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clear explanations, build their confidence, and create a supportive learning environment. A tutor should break down complex topics in a way that makes sense to the student, ensuring they truly understand rather than just memorize. Encouragement is also key—helping…

Be patient for the student. The tutor can obviously teach them, make notes, give tips and more. However, I think that being patient allows them to be more free with you in the sense that they can be more open in saying I do not understand this or asking the tutor to repeat something. Most of my students love the way I teach. I think it’s because…

I think encouraging the student is the most important thing a tutor can do even more than results as if the student begins to become more inquisitive and enterprising in their own learning they will do better overall. The most important thing a tutor can do is to show real life examples or threads that the student can relate to while learning new concepts. Being patient to students and being able to think in different ways. Patience is essential for us tutors as students may require us to explain a question several times in order to fully comprehend. Yet in some other cases we need to be able to think in different ways when solving a problem as students may not get the way that we usually solve a…

Local Reviews

Tuition sessions are going on really well as my son has had considerable improvements in Maths with better grades ( jumped from C to A) and much better conceptual understanding of several difficult topics. He finds Ben a gentle and consistent tutor who has kept a wonderful rapport with him. They have also covered some topics in English which helped quite a bit. I would certainly recommend Benjamin as a very helpful and effective tutor for teenagers.

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ali worked through operations with fractions—including addition, subtraction, and multiplication with different denominators—and then applied these skills to simplify algebraic fractional expressions.

For Year 8, Max focused on measurement by tackling area problems for irregular shapes (including trapeziums), an introduction to surface area, and a worded question involving the volume of 3D shapes.

In Year 9, Gus practiced converting between units, calculated perimeters, explored surface area, and wrapped up by examining how the angles in any triangle always sum to 180 degrees.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, one student's written working was often incomplete or hard to follow—"could work on writing out his working a little bit more"—making it difficult to identify calculation errors in topics like triangular prism volume.

For a Year 11 student tackling calculus, time management issues during exam practice meant that they rushed through u-substitution questions and missed key steps ("exam taking techniques/time management").

In VCE biology, another student needed frequent revision of cellular respiration; gaps in review led to forgetting process stages such as oxidative phosphorylation when answering short-answer tasks. This created frustration when recalling under pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Carlton tutor noticed Ali, a Year 9 student, was able to transfer her new understanding of fractions into solving algebraic expressions—something she'd previously found tricky.

In a recent high school session, Max showed real initiative by drawing diagrams to tackle complex surface area word problems instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Gus (Year 7) shifted from hesitating with unit conversions to confidently using an acronym he created himself and started tackling unfamiliar perimeter questions without pause.

This week, Ali finished by converting mixed numerals independently after initial struggles.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton Primary School.
