I consider creating a positive and supportive learning atmosphere as paramount for a tutor. Beyond academic assistance, it involves nurturing confidence, offering constructive feedback, and acknowledging achievements. Tailoring teaching methods to accommodate individual learning styles is equally vital. Effective communication, coupled with active…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be able to explain how to solve problems in several different ways, particularly if a student is struggling to understand how to solve it the first time. These problem solving skills will help them in other areas as well, such as chemistry and physics. My main strength as a tutor…

Since, I am a student also, I think like a best teacher is the best motivator. So how it works ,never told a student directly that he or she is wrong, instead told them like ,you are near but can you think in another way or try to improvise your idea differently and present it. For me a "Best teacher is a best motivator" be it subjects or in…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to acknowledge and understand their challenges. The impact that we make as tutors go beyond the subject and we can really shape the way students address their challenge areas while studying. Apart from my knowledge and skills in math, I think the one thing that sets me apart…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide a relaxing environment for them to learn. I will consider myself as a buddy/friend with my student instead of a teacher and guide them through their learning journey instead of delivering knowledge on a command based which they experience in school I think my strength is that…

During my teaching experiences what I believe to have been a helpful technique is using relatable scenarios to help build understanding especially when it…

As I said sticking with them the knowledge has been properly imparted is probably the most important thing. The other thing would be to make sure that the student is comfortable with the teaching methods and is having fun. The greatest strength that a tutor need is patience and I have had it tested a lot by my younger brother and it's fair to say…

Personally, I believe the most important things a tutor can do is being fully aware of the student's experience so that the tutor can adapt their own teaching styles and interactions in order to best support the student. This not only contributes to the process of learning content, but also to the wellbeing of the student under tutelage as…

Before starting the tutoring sessions, it is crucial to evaluate the student's current level of understanding of the subject matter. This allows the tutor to create a personalized plan to address the student's weaknesses and reinforce their strengths. Being patient and supportive is also essential. I believe building an understanding about the student and the ways in which they learn best is what separates a tutor from a textbook. The personal skills needed to determine that are most important as it then allows the customisation of learning. Because my understanding of concepts are very logical, I am able to give explanations depending on…

To boost confidence and motivation. I believe that you cannot force a student to learn, but you can guide them to do their best. If the student does not wish to learn, there is not much I can do to improve their grades. But, if the students are highly motivated and willing to learn, even if their grades are below average, they can rapidly improve…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be kind and patient with a student. Tutoring can be frustrating but a tutor must never make their student feel bad or insecure even when they themselves are a bit agitated. Being really punctual. When a student wants an appointment with a tutor, the tutor should come on time. Not only that, considering the student's perspective is really important. The tutor should be really compassionate to their students and is always there whenever the student needs help. Even though the tutor is busy and tired, a wise tutor…

While a tutor's contracted duty is to assist a student academically, I believe a tutor can do something far more in the process. A tutor can be the reason a student develops a greater sense of purpose at school. A tutor can be the reason a student falls in love with a subject and chooses to pursue it for the rest of their life. All in all, a tutor…

The main benefit of 1 on 1 tuition over in-class learning is that the teaching is flexible, and more time can be spent on areas the students are struggling with, while not needing to dwell on subjects the students are already familiar with. I prefer to explain basic course concepts before the students learn them in class, so they can more easily…

Local Reviews

Tuition sessions are going on really well as my son has had considerable improvements in Maths with better grades ( jumped from C to A) and much better conceptual understanding of several difficult topics. He finds Ben a gentle and consistent tutor who has kept a wonderful rapport with him. They have also covered some topics in English which helped quite a bit. I would certainly recommend Benjamin as a very helpful and effective tutor for teenagers.

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ali worked through operations with fractions—including addition, subtraction, and multiplication with different denominators—and then applied these skills to simplify algebraic fractional expressions.

For Year 8, Max focused on measurement by tackling area problems for irregular shapes (including trapeziums), an introduction to surface area, and a worded question involving the volume of 3D shapes.

In Year 9, Gus practiced converting between units, calculated perimeters, explored surface area, and wrapped up by examining how the angles in any triangle always sum to 180 degrees.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, one student's written working was often incomplete or hard to follow—"could work on writing out his working a little bit more"—making it difficult to identify calculation errors in topics like triangular prism volume.

For a Year 11 student tackling calculus, time management issues during exam practice meant that they rushed through u-substitution questions and missed key steps ("exam taking techniques/time management").

In VCE biology, another student needed frequent revision of cellular respiration; gaps in review led to forgetting process stages such as oxidative phosphorylation when answering short-answer tasks. This created frustration when recalling under pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Carlton tutor noticed Ali, a Year 9 student, was able to transfer her new understanding of fractions into solving algebraic expressions—something she'd previously found tricky.

In a recent high school session, Max showed real initiative by drawing diagrams to tackle complex surface area word problems instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Gus (Year 7) shifted from hesitating with unit conversions to confidently using an acronym he created himself and started tackling unfamiliar perimeter questions without pause.

This week, Ali finished by converting mixed numerals independently after initial struggles.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton Primary School.
