I think that the best thing a tutor can do for their students is to give them self confidence. In my experience as a tutor i feel that being unable to understand the material provided at school makes the student doubt their capabilities. To me the most important job of any tutor is to re-kindle that flame of passion and restore their confidence. I…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students develop their own thought process when solving problems. Instead of giving direct answers, I guide students through the reasoning behind each step so they understand why certain key points matter. A tutor should create an encouraging environment where students feel supported,…

Provide specific help to them and act as a mentor to them who they can relate to. In effect, the student should be able to ask any question without fear of judgement, so they can have all their learning needs catered for. I change my approach based on each student and identify strengths and weaknesses quickly. I also encourage students to ask…

I strongly believe that a good tutor can change the entire perception of the subject for a student. Throughout my life I have been fortunate enough to be in the presence of inspiring teachers because of which I developed a strong liking for my subjects. A good tutor is one who can understand the needs of the student and execute it in the most…

I consider being patient and maintaining a positive attitude to be the most significant as Math can be a challenging subject for many students, so being patient and understanding helps explain concepts multiple times and in different ways if necessary. Additionallly, a positive attitude in order to motivate students to overcome challenges and…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to be patient with the student and try to understand why they find that specific problem or concept difficult. It is the tutors job to explain and teach so that it is easy for the student to understand. I am very understanding and patient. It is difficult to learn new skills and teachings,…

To help them master concepts in the subject instead of route learning. Tutors and students must also break the ice between them in order to teach efficiently. Lastly, tutors should provide some challenging questions for students to help them in their exams. I have past experience helping students with problems they face with their homeworks and I…

To be understanding and patient in teaching, giving support when needed like notes, help in homework and emotional support. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to provide insights, looking ahead at ones studies. This can mean a few things, this could be rigorous methods of proving results to foster understanding, to motivate the student in regards to applications of their studies and also to provide confidence to the student in following the course…

A tutor should help a student to achieve his or her goal. Moreover, he/she should be able to boost the self-confidence of students in answering questions. In truth, a lot of students are uncertain of whether they are answering/tackling a question the right way (especially for maths questions), thereby wasting time in an exam and possibly not…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be able to explain how to solve problems in several different ways, particularly if a student is struggling to understand how to solve it the first time. These problem solving skills will help them in other areas as well, such as chemistry and physics. My main strength as a tutor…

Since, I am a student also, I think like a best teacher is the best motivator. For me a "Best teacher is a best motivator" be it subjects or in…

This allows the tutor to create a personalized plan to address the student's weaknesses and reinforce their strengths. Being patient and supportive is also essential. To boost confidence and motivation. I believe that you cannot force a student to learn, but you can guide them to do their best. If the student does not wish to learn, there is not much I can do to improve their grades. But, if the students are highly motivated and willing to learn, even if their grades are below average, they can rapidly improve…

The most important thing in tutoring is that the tutor should not force their way of thinking and understanding on the student, instead they should build up from the foundation of knowledge that the student already has, guiding them to find a solution that they can understand. This not only makes the learning process for the student more…

Local Reviews

Tuition sessions are going on really well as my son has had considerable improvements in Maths with better grades ( jumped from C to A) and much better conceptual understanding of several difficult topics. He finds Ben a gentle and consistent tutor who has kept a wonderful rapport with him. They have also covered some topics in English which helped quite a bit. I would certainly recommend Benjamin as a very helpful and effective tutor for teenagers.

Inside CarltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ali worked through operations with fractions—including addition, subtraction, and multiplication with different denominators—and then applied these skills to simplify algebraic fractional expressions.

For Year 8, Max focused on measurement by tackling area problems for irregular shapes (including trapeziums), an introduction to surface area, and a worded question involving the volume of 3D shapes.

In Year 9, Gus practiced converting between units, calculated perimeters, explored surface area, and wrapped up by examining how the angles in any triangle always sum to 180 degrees.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, one student's written working was often incomplete or hard to follow—"could work on writing out his working a little bit more"—making it difficult to identify calculation errors in topics like triangular prism volume.

For a Year 11 student tackling calculus, time management issues during exam practice meant that they rushed through u-substitution questions and missed key steps ("exam taking techniques/time management").

In VCE biology, another student needed frequent revision of cellular respiration; gaps in review led to forgetting process stages such as oxidative phosphorylation when answering short-answer tasks. This created frustration when recalling under pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Carlton tutor noticed Ali, a Year 9 student, was able to transfer her new understanding of fractions into solving algebraic expressions—something she'd previously found tricky.

In a recent high school session, Max showed real initiative by drawing diagrams to tackle complex surface area word problems instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Gus (Year 7) shifted from hesitating with unit conversions to confidently using an acronym he created himself and started tackling unfamiliar perimeter questions without pause.

This week, Ali finished by converting mixed numerals independently after initial struggles.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kathleen Syme Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carlton Primary School.
