A tutor can do a lot for their student, but I believe that building their confidence, making learning approachable, and encouraging independent thinking are the most crucial tasks. Providing the correct answers is not the only thing that matters; it is also important to assist students in developing the means to discover those answers on their…

I believe that as a tutor, what I can help with most is finding out the missing links in the knowledge network of my students and helping them to make those up. No matter at what point my students start, I think my job is to help them realise they can always make progress from there and reach a more advanced level. I am good at guiding students to…

To create a supportive and collaborative environment where both parties can work together comfortably and get things done on time. An environment where the student feels comfortable enough to ask their questions without worrying is the best environment for learning. I believe that having flexibility in teaching methods is very important for a tutor. Not all students are able to understand concepts in the same way so being able to look at things from the student's perspective and help them understand really helps a students journey and increases their trust and confidence. Sometimes, this means using different…

Whilst ensuring the student learns or develops topics/skills is important, fostering an interest and curiosity in the subject is more important in my opinion. Through the support of teachers and students in my schooling I have grown a deep interest in maths, science and literature, which makes study and learning these subjects easy! I am patient,…

A tutor's role is to help students understand key concepts and apply them confidently, leading to growth in both understanding and academic performance. Ultimately, though, I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is help students develop confidence in their own abilities and nurture a genuine curiosity and love of learning that…

The most important thing would be creating a safe and encouraging space for the students to learn. Keeping classes fun and interactive makes it easier for students to learn and remember new concepts. As a mentor, make sure that the student evolves not just in a lesson but can practically apply them in real life . As a tutor, I excel at building…

The most important things a tutor can do for students is to teach as well as keep them motivated on their progress. A tutor shapes a child or an adult to get the best out of themselves and helps them gain courage and be brave with their studies. I have a great way of teaching in where I combine practical and application based teaching. I am…

To help them become confident and self-sufficient in the subject! I work to fill the gaps in knowledge that often hold students back from achieving all they are capable of. I know what it's like to struggle with maths in high school and so relate to students who may be less confident. My approach is to break exercises down into little parts,…

I think I huge part of it is often confidence. I have found most students already understand and are able to do the work however they don’t have the confidence to back themselves. In my approach- I want to guide them by building their confidence and helping them step by step through all weaker areas of their academics. I think I am patient…

The main objective is to help the student to gain confidence about a subject that initially seems complicated. I believe that explaining the fundamentals concepts and laws is simpler by setting examples from daily life experiences. Moreover, this approach makes physics and math more enjoyable. Studying a master in mechanical engineering provided…

Tutors can support other educators to help students learn how to learn. 1-on-1 support can help shed light on the exact nature of any obstacles a student might experience, which might be missed in a group classroom setting. In school, the subject teacher need to face a relatively large group of students, so their teaching style and pace of lesson are more inclined to fit the majority but not everyone. Therefore when it comes to private tuition, the tutor conducting one-to-one lesson can focus on the student himself and personalize the lesson in a way that this…

Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
